The Opportunity:
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Environmental Services Office (ESO) is currently seeking an experienced environmental professional to fill the vacancy of Wetland Monitoring Manager in Tumwater, WA! This successful candidate will supervise the Headquarters (HQ) Monitoring Group, an organizational segment in the HQ ESO Wetland Program. The position is responsible for independently planning and conducting monitoring activities at environmental mitigation sites statewide.

The Wetland Monitoring Manager will perform the following work:

  • Works independently to plan, coordinate, and implement monitoring of WSDOT wetland mitigation sites.
  • Coordinates monitoring efforts with regions and modes.
  • Schedules field work for monitoring of the mitigation sites.
  • Provides leadership for mitigation site monitoring activities including: data collection and analysis and technical report writing.
  • Researches and develops appropriate monitoring techniques to achieve program goals.
  • Supervises up to 5 professional monitoring staff and up to 24 seasonal interns.
  • Trains and mentors wetland monitoring staff to assure consistent high quality work products.
  • Develops individual training plans for professional monitoring biologists.
  • Develops and leads training program for seasonal interns.
  • Supports the Wetlands Program Manager in developing policies and standard operating procedures for WSDOT work related to wetland monitoring.
  • Assists the Wetlands Program Manager in developing and administering the budget related to monitoring work and activities.
  • Participates in professional workshops, training sessions, seminars, conferences, and meetings sponsored by government agencies, universities, and professional organizations.
  • Reviews professional literature to maintain and enrich professional knowledge and stay current with regulations and evaluation methods.

The requirements for this position include:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in ecology, botany, biology, ecological restoration, environmental science, natural resource science or related field.
  • Five years professional experience in wetland biology and ecology, and federal, state and local wetland regulations.
  • Successful completion of a wetland delineation training course.
  • Successful completion of a Washington wetland rating training course.
  • Working knowledge of restoration ecology.
  • Strong understanding of ecological monitoring techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex information to diverse groups.
  • Ability to supervise both professional and technical staff.
  • A valid driver’s license.
