This is a temporary part-time position. The Children’s Education department is seeking two GreenSchool Educators. GreenSchool offers plant science workshops and tours incorporating inquiry and observation-and-exploration based field investigations throughout the Garden with the goal of student experiential learning and appreciation of the natural world. Educators lead school group programs as well as maintain teaching supplies, plants and classroom space. Must be available Tuesday – Friday 9am – 2pm during the school year schedule.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Facilitate indoor and outdoor set-curriculum inquiry-based plant science as well ascross-disciplinary workshops and tours for kindergarten through 8th grade school group (all ability levels, including children with learning differences)

Use pedagogically-appropriate practices which help build student understandings constructively through investigation of unique resources, hand-on activities, and peer collaboration in both informal Garden setting and formal classroom settings

Facilitate the set-up of classrooms and supplies each morning, followed by the clean-up, inventory and preparation of materials each afternoon.

Assist in the assessment of existing and new GreenSchool curricula, as needed and as related to changing Garden exhibitions

Solicit teacher evaluation of education programs

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Potential candidates must have an undergraduate degree with a background and/or strong familiarity with current museum education practices

Strong science (ecology, botany, or horticulture) and teaching experience in informal settings preferred

Excellent oral communication skills are required

Ability to work in all weather conditions and to be flexible incorporating museum resources in a complex, dynamic and fast-paced environment

Outgoing and friendly personality; responsible, punctual, professional and motivated

Prior experience and enthusiasm for working with school children, must love plants

Must have a flexible schedule between 5-20 hours per week depending on group registrations
