The Opportunity:
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Environmental Services Office is currently seeking to fill our Habitat Connectivity Biologist position located in Olympia, WA. The successful candidate will serve as the project lead in a multi-pronged approach to integrating habitat connectivity principals into all aspects of the state’s stewardship of the transportation system.  This includes providing critical program evaluation to WSDOT projects to ensure that habitat connectivity is addressed. It also includes development of Habitat Connectivity priorities for the state highway system and communicating those priorities to internal and external audiences.

Please note: This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Transportation Planning Specialist field, and achieve a goal class of Transportation Planning Specialist 4. Candidates will be considered at the Transportation Planning Specialist 2, Transportation Planning Specialist 3, or Transportation Planning Specialist 4 level, depending on qualifications.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Serve as the project lead to integrating habitat connectivity principals into the transportation system.
  • Communicate highway system priorities for habitat connectivity to internal and external audiences.
  • Participate in landscape planning and habitat conservation efforts.
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the Environmental Services Office for delivery of the habitat connectivity program.
  • Develop and communicate agency guidance to assist designers with infrastructure that benefits wildlife, increasing the permeability of state highways to wildlife and minimizing wildlife-vehicle collisions.
  • Provide technical assistance to agency regions on wildlife issues and information requests.
  • Serve as the technical expert on research projects with a habitat connectivity focus.
  • Provide support for Endangered Species Act consultations and the development of Programmatic Biological Assessments.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife science, biology, zoology or environmental studies.
  • Three years of professional experience as a wildlife biologist or ecologist. (Unless hired under an in-training plan)
  • Expert knowledge of Pacific Northwest wildlife species, their distribution, ecology, life history and habitat associations.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Experience with applying Geographic Information Systems to predicting wildlife habitat utilization or movement corridors is desired.
