The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Environmental Services Office is excited to announce two opportunities as Wetland Biologists – Field Lead and Project Coordinators located in Tumwater, WA. These positions are professional wetland biologists in the Wetland Program in the Biology Branch of the ESO.

Note: These positions have an approved in-training plan and can be filled at the Transportation Planning Specialist 2 – Transportation Planning Specialist 3 level at the hiring manager’s discretion. Details and salaries for each classification are listed below.
Transportation Planning Specialist 2 – $53,592.00-$72,036.00 annually
Transportation Planning Specialist 3 – $59,148.00-$79,548.00 annually
This position will perform the following work:
- Independently plan and conduct monitoring activities, collect and analyze data and write reports for wetland mitigation sites statewide.
- Develop site-specific monitoring plans and select and modify methods for conducting studies of vegetation, hydrology, soils, wildlife, and wildlife habitats.
- Use monitoring data to provide specific recommendations concerning the development of mitigation projects statewide.
- Write complete monitoring reports to document compliance with environmental permits for federal, state and local regulatory agencies.
- Lead and supervise a field monitoring team consisting of two to six college interns or state employees. Train college interns in wetland science and monitoring techniques.
- Conduct wetland delineations, wetland ratings and wetland functional assessments at mitigation sites.
At the Goal Class of TPS3, the ideal candidate for this position will have:
- Bachelor’s degree in ecology, botany, biology, environmental science, natural science or related field.
- Two years of professional experience in wetland biology and ecology.
- Successful completion of a wetland delineation training course.
- Knowledge of and experience conducting scientific and technical studies of wetlands, aquatic systems, riparian areas, and other plant communities, including wetland delineations, wetland ratings, and wetland functional assessments.
- Strong skills in plant identification and proficiency in using technical keys to identify plans to species.
- Knowledge of federal, state and local government regulations pertaining to wetlands, streams, and other waters of the state.
- Valid driver’s license
