Natural Resource Worker 2
(Full-time, Non-Permanent)
Spokane, WA and Pasco, WA

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill multiple, Full time, Non-permanent positions for a Natural Resource Worker 2 located in the Enforcement Program, Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Watercraft Inspection/Decontamination division. The duty stations will be located at the Pasco WDFW Office, 2620 N Commercial Ave, 99301, Benton County and Spokane Watercraft Inspection Decontamination Station, 26715 East Apple way Avenue, Liberty Lake, WA 99019, Spokane County. The employment period is for the duration of the 2019 Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) which is approximately 10 months (anticipated to run from February 1 – November 30.  (It is anticipated that the Pasco positions will run from February 1 – October 31 and the Spokane positions will run from March 1 – November 30).

This position will inspect watercraft at check stations for Aquatic Invasive Species, conduct standardized interviews to complete watercraft inspection forms (electronic documenting of the inspections), and determine if watercraft meet clean & drained (dry) requirements. Additionally, this position will identify Aquatic Invasive Species on watercraft (if applicable), interact with the public, transport trailered electronic reader boards, and deploy signage alerting watercraft of check stations. Duties

Inspect watercraft for Aquatic Invasive Species entering the state:

  • Inspect Watercraft for the presence of AIS and accurately record inspection on electronic form.
  • Educate customers about AIS.
  • Ensure customers have a positive experience.
  • Maintain check station facilities and equipment.
  • Complete assigned tasks as needed.

Equipment operation:

  • Operates and maintains vehicles (trucks, vans, and other vehicles), watercraft decontamination equipment, small mechanical and hand tools, Mobile Messaging Boards, and portable highway signage. Safely operates vehicles and equipment at check stations and along WA State roadways/highways and at selected boat ramps.

Station maintenance:

  • Plymouth Inspection Facilities maintenance.  Maintain the check station trailer work areas as well as equipment used to operate the inspection station, including generators, lights, electronic equipment and signs.

Customer relations.

  • Interacting with the public to answer questions about WDFW AIS Watercraft Inspection/Decontamination Program.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with field use of Electronic Tablets/Ipads for documentation of Watercraft Inspections.
  • Experience using basic tools and equipment.
  • Basic mechanical interest and aptitude.
  • Experience in dealing & interacting in situations where citizens might become confrontational or non-cooperative.
  • Three (3) months experiences at an AIS watercraft inspection station

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions.  Hazards include: inclement weather, traffic, power tools, uneven terrain, carrying heavy loads (50 pounds), etc.

Union:

  • This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.

Tools and Equipment:

  • Trucks (4×4), vans, trailers, mobile messaging boards, hot water pressure washers, hand tool, power tools, ladders, boats and other types of watercraft.

Customer Interactions: 

  • Answer questions from watercraft owners/haulers.
  • Answers questions from general public.
  • Sometimes interacts with media/reporters.
  • Sometimes interacts with non-cooperative/confrontational people.
  • Interacts with WDFW Enforcement Officers.
