The Opportunity:
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Information Technology Division (ITD) Infrastructure Services Server Support Operations Team manages and maintains enterprise-wide server and storage infrastructure. This team is responsible for all aspects of operations including the planning, design, implementation, testing, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of all the systems in the environment. The functionality provided by these system and services are leveraged extensively by all WSDOT employees, external partners, and the public. The scope of the systems and the services involved are broad and highly complex and often involve multiple servers and services that integrate with various system types.

This In-Training position represents the agency’s highest-level expert in a number of assigned specialty areas. This involves representing their assigned specialty areas as a technical expert in meetings with peers, management and business representatives. They will act as technical leads for agency-wide server infrastructure projects, coordinating the development of agency wide strategies and standards for agency-wide infrastructure solutions. The incumbent will provide primary management and administration in addition to developing and maintaining documentation and providing training as needed.

Note: This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Information Technology Specialist field, and achieve the goal class of an Information Technology Specialist 5. Candidates will be considered as an Information Technology Specialist 3, 4, or 5, depending on their qualifications. The salary levels for each are:

Information Technology Specialist 3 – $54,924 – $73,908
Information Technology Specialist 4 – $60,636 – $81,516
Information Technology Specialist 5 – $66,888 – $90,000

This position will perform the following work:

  • Research, plan, design, test, and lead the agency in determining and implementing agency-wide standards for server infrastructure projects including backup and recovery, database server support, business intelligence, video encoding/streaming, instant messaging, and distributed file systems in support of system environments in the agency.
  • Maintain, monitor, troubleshoot, and manage the agency’s server virtualization and enterprise storage environments in support of agency mission-critical IT systems.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation in designated specialties areas.
  • Provides knowledge transfer, training and mentorship in designated areas of responsibility.

An ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • 4 years of experience supporting the operation of an enterprise-level server infrastructure including Windows Operating Systems, Active Directory, and Virtualization technology is required
  • Bachelor of Science in Information Technology field or discipline.
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert – 2008 or higher
  • Expert level knowledge of storage area network management
  • Expert level knowledge of the Microsoft Windows Server operating system
  • Expert level knowledge of Backup and Recovery process and procedures
  • Senior to Expert level knowledge of Federation Technology
  • Senior to Expert level knowledge of Instant Messaging/Presence/Collaboration
  • Senior to Expert level knowledge of Video Encoding/Streaming
  • Senior to Expert level Datacenter Management skills
  • Senior level knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server
  • Senior level knowledge of Microsoft’s PowerShell scripting language
