FISH & WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST 1
(Non-Permanent)
The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one full time, non-permanent Fish & Wildlife Biologist 1 position located in the Wildlife Program, Game Division.  The duty station for this position is located at the Natural Resource Building, 1111 Washington St. SE, Olympia..

The position reports to the Small Game and Furbearer Biologist IV. Under the direction of the Small Game and Furbearer Biologist IV or the Section Manager this position assists with developing and implementing a new beaver relocation program and assists with wild turkey outreach, education, and management. This position will provide support for statewide management of beaver, wild turkey, and other small game, furbearer, and upland game bird species from February through June, with potential for extension. The position may periodically assist in other section duties as needed. Primary duties include: assist with development of a beaver relocation program, education and outreach for beaver and turkey, and assistance with the turkey management program.

Duties

Assist with the furbearer management program.

  • Assist with development and implementation of the beaver relocation training, including collaboration with the Beaver Working Group and other agencies and stakeholders. Develop website materials for beaver relocation permit applicants and landowners interested in beaver relocation. Develop electronic data collection forms for beaver relocation annual reporting. Provide support for other tasks as needed, which may include harvest data management and implementation of the CITES program.

Assist with the turkey and upland bird management program.

  • Develop education and outreach materials, including an information pamphlet for new turkey hunters. Collaborate with partners and other staff to develop outreach strategies, materials, and hunting clinics. Assist with compiling local turkey data and information to guide statewide management. Assist with turkey survey protocol assessment and development. Provide support for other tasks as needed, which may include upland bird survey development and implementation.

Assist the small game and furbearer unit with other duties as assigned.

  • Assist with other tasks as needed to support small game, furbearer, and upland game bird management. Interact with the public to answer questions and provide information about the program.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or related field; or equivalent in education/experience.
  • Professional: One (1) year of professional experience conducting field related research.
  • Knowledge of: beaver ecology, biology, and behavior; beaver capture and handling techniques
  • Skills/Abilities: Ability to meet productivity standards, deadlines and work schedules. Ability to work independently maintaining a high quality of work. Must be punctual and perform in a dependable manner.
  • Communication Skills/Abilities: Ability to convey ideas and facts orally and in writing.
  • Computer Resources and Program Skills/Abilities: Experience with Microsoft Office programs and personal computers, familiarity within Windows-driven computer programs.

Appearance and Attire – While an agency dress code is not currently required, Biologists are expected to dress appropriately for the type of work they are conducting. An agency emblem must be visible while conducting work for the department outside of the home office.  A professional appearance including grooming and attire is expected when working with local, state, and federal agencies, tribes, permit applicants and the public. Footwear used during field work should be appropriate so as to minimize risk of injury.
Must be able to travel occasionally.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of: turkey or upland game bird ecology, biology and behavior. Familiarity with furbearer trapping and management, including the CITES program.
  • Experience with: beaver relocation and turkey or upland game bird hunting. Work experience and geographic familiarity with areas currently occupied by beaver and turkey in Washington.
  • Skills/Abilities: chemical immobilization of wildlife, operating in the field with minimal supervision.
  • Communication Skills/Abilities: experience teaching or training diverse participants. Experience working with public engagement, outreach, and education. Experience and skill with publishing and developing outreach materials.
  • Computer Resources and Program Skills/Abilities: ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and Survey123.
  • Education: Master’s degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology, or wildlife ecology; with emphasis on furbearers or upland game birds.
  • Consulting Skills/Abilities: Ability to partner with staff, supervisors and collaborators to identify and resolve complex or sensitive issues.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:
Work Setting, including hazards-Employee must be capable of stooping, bending, walking, lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds over steep, rugged terrain in hot or cold weather.  Employee must be able to exercise sound and good judgement to ensure personal and co-worker safety. Potential hazards are associated with hot (100+ degrees) and cold weather, stinging and biting insects, plants with thorns, animals with sharp pointed teeth, blistering sun, and/or wind chill. This is primarily an office position with occasional work outside. The incumbent will need to be able to walk overland and in streams through thick vegetation, climbing over and around log jams and wood debris on uneven terrain and slippery surfaces while carrying up to 30lbs of field gear. The majority of the work week is spent in the office doing computer work with typical office hazards (e.g. sharp edges on desks, unprotected corners on overhead cabinets, unsecured shelving and cabinets, and tripping hazards). Occasional driving will be required with associated road hazards.
Schedule-Monday –Friday, between 8:00am-5:00pm depending upon daily tasks.
Travel Requirements-Overnight travel may be required on occasion.
Tools and Equipment-Computers, phones, smart phones and/or tablets. Use of standard vehicles for travel.
Customer Interactions-Customer interactions will occur with both internal and external customers. Interaction may occur through written and verbal correspondence; including telephone, email, and in person interactions. Represent the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in a professional manner. Have professional and respectful dialog with other agencies and/or civilians.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.
