Position DescriptionThe City of Tacoma’s Information Technology Department is seeking an energetic, highly motivated, and skilled GIS Supervisor/Coordinator to oversee and direct GIS database/applications development, analysis, production of standards and procedures, maintenance, supervision of personnel, and implementation; provide advice and recommendations to management and users and provide Geographic information systems services and technical advice as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervises staff including prioritizing and developing work plans, evaluating staff performance, monitoring progress on reports and projects, interpreting policies and procedures, establishing standards, and providing training and development for staff
  • Serves as the City’s expert for enterprise GIS management, and plays a key role in guiding the direction and development of the enterprise GIS
  • Lead GIS projects and contracts; direct project employees and provide status reports as necessary; prepare and present project status reports and recommendations to various committees
  • Research new products and information technology innovations; prepare detailed bid specifications for product or service acquisition; evaluates problem areas and uses available information to develop recommendations
  • Prepare detailed cost/budget analysis reports including cost estimates for user departments on projects or proposals
  • Monitor status of IT work requests; coordinate GIS development, testing and delivery; assure the timely distribution of status reports and outputs to departments
  • Interview prospective employees; make recommendations to management regarding staffing
  • Provide assistance, advice and recommendations to management and users to determine needs and provide information technology services
  • Maintain communication with users and other information technology staff, communicating problems with applications, schedules or other concerns
  • Assist in preparation of departmental annual budget; monitor expenditures and project development costs
  • Establishes working relationship with regional partners and peers regarding data sharing, analysis, and practices in GIS
  • Read trade journals, attend seminars and perform related activities to remain current on latest GIS trends and services
  • Conduct and attend staff meetings and other meetings as required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

An equivalent combination to: bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field and six years of increasingly responsible experience in Geographic Information Systems including three years experience in a supervisory role.

Desired Qualifications:

  • GISP Certification
  • PMP / Scrum Certification.
  • Working knowledge of WEB GIS framework
  • Experience working in public sector

Licensing, Certifications And Other Legal Requirements:

  • Depending upon assignment a WA driver’s license may be required
  • Individuals may have to pass a background check depending upon assignment
  • Additional licenses or certifications may be required based upon assignment
