IWRA’s next webinar will focus on “The Global Water Security Challenge” to take place on Tuesday, April 16th from 4 pm to 5:30 pm CET. You are cordially invited to join!

This webinar co-organised by Christopher Scott (University of Arizona) and Chad Staddon (University West of England) builds on Water International Special Issue (vol. 43, issue 8) on this same topic, which was also co-edited by both of them. It will explore the water security concept from diverse points of view, including scientific, case study, thematic, social justice, and empirical analyses.  Particular attention will be given to the emerging relationships with other forms of security, including energy security and food security. Examples are drawn from current research in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America. This webinar also aims to promote dialogue in the lead-up to the IWRA’s XVII World Water Congress, to be held in Daegu, Korea (11-15 May 2020) on the theme of “Foundations for Global Water Security and Resilience: Knowledge, Technology and Policy”.

Participation is free and open to all. Audience questions are encouraged.

Over the last decade water security has emerged from the scholarly literature on human and environmental security and gained credence as a resource management framework and a policy goal. There is renewed concern that the “securitization” of water plays into nationalist and regionalist tendencies that pursue control over resources.  At the same time, however, expanding conceptions of water security underpin the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically by incorporating social and ecological resilience, socio-economic equity, participatory planning, and intersectoral perspectives that enhance water, energy, and food security.
