Position Description

The City of Tacoma is recruiting for an Enviro-Challenger Educator in the classification of Program Development Specialist.  We are searching for an outgoing, energetic person with a proven background in creating engaging and innovative environmental lessons through artistic expressions.

Primary responsibilities for this position include creating art environmental lessons which foster student’s desire to make changes in daily life to promote environmental health and sustainability, teaching and maintain current teaching in K-8th grade classrooms during the school year, staffing the will be teaching and creating environmental lessons to K-8 students in a classroom setting during the school year, staffing the City’s Environmental Services community events outreach booth, teaching summer camps, and creating art environmental lessons. We hope to foster students’ desire to make changes in daily life to promote environmental lessons, build relationships with schools and environmental communities partners to promote environmental sustainability.

Examples of Job Duties:

Present classroom lessons, mainly K-8th grade, teaching and promoting environmental health, meeting City environmental sustainability goals and State education standards, as well as district/classroom expectations.
Present Environmental Sustainability messages at public events; coordinate and schedule with various organizations and City’s offices, inform and educate public, assemble and dismantle Enviro-Challenger outreach booth.
Expand and develop the Enviro-Challenger program, develop and implement art curriculum to meet City environmental sustainability goals and State art standards, as well as district/classroom expectations using creative and expressive STEAM-powered lessons.
Collect and maintain supplies for art curriculum and maintain and clean supplies for lessons.
Research and keep abreast of current environmental issues, changes in messaging, and various organizations within the City involved with sustainability.
Attend various meetings, build and maintain professional relationships with other City Departments, organizations and individuals within the fields of education and environmental health.
Work with the EnviroChallenger team to evaluate programs progress and results; research and compile information concerning program needs and resources
Promote program through TV, photo shoots, distribution of fliers and other marketing strategies
Create a unique art connection for Enviro-Challenger and environmental sustainability with reintroduction of an art contest, school art projects.

An equivalent combination to:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in teaching or environmental studies and two years work experience in teaching (formal or informal) to youth;

OR

Six years’ experience in formal or informal teaching to youth with emphasis on arts and environment.
