Washington State Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) is hiring for 3 positions on the Aquatic Assessment and Monitoring Team (AAMT) starting as soon as May 2019, or after depending on when applicant is available. The job is a field/ lab position that is funded through June 2020 – however it can be ended sooner based on individual preference. Primary responsibilities will have to do with completing fieldwork and maintaining equipment associated with the mechanical control of a nuisance species of burrowing shrimp. The job is based out Olympia, WA. but fieldwork will occur on the tidal flats of Willapa Bay WA. – fieldwork will include moderate to heavy manual labor, in all weather conditions.

The State is looking into the longevity and extent of a mechanical method of control for N. californiensis – a species of burrowing shrimp. The shrimp’s burrowing activity has been a problem for oyster growers in Willapa Bay, where their product will sink and suffocate in areas affected by the shrimp.

The data from this work will inform shellfish growers in Willapa Bay and direct management decisions.

Successful applicants may also be involved in other projects within AAMT. Information on our team can be found here: https://www.dnr.wa.gov/programs-and-services/aquatics/aquatic-science/aquatic-assessment-and-monitoring-team/adaptive
