This Hydrogeologist 2 position serves as a staff hydrogeologist and is responsible for planning and conducting hydrogeologic investigations and providing technical services for groundwater, unsaturated zone and/or surface water investigations.
We are looking for applicants who possess a solid working knowledge of the principals and practices of geology and hydrogeology as they relate to the quality, quantity, development, and monitoring of groundwater and surface water resources. Applicants must have the ability and interest to work in the field under potentially adverse weather conditions. The successful candidate must also possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work both independently and with others in a project team setting.
This position will primarily be responsible for conducting monitoring field studies of toxics cleanup sites. Although, as a staff hydrogeologist work activities may also include studies to characterize groundwater/surface water interactions and asses potential impacts to groundwater quality from other land use practices.

This position serves as a staff hydrogeologist for EAP’s Groundwater/Forests and Fish unit. Some of the key work activities for this Hydrogeologist 2 position include:
Conducts groundwater or surface water quality studies and analyzes environmental data:
- Conducts project planning and compiles background information and existing data for assigned cleanup sites.
- Develops project-specific study design and prepares Quality Assurance Project Plans, particularly in support of groundwater monitoring of toxic contaminants at hazardous water sites.
- Plans and implements field logistics and data collection.
- Performs quality checks on water quality data and loads hydrogeologic data into the agency’s environmental database (EIM).
- Performs analysis of hydrogeologic data and information using a variety of analytical tools to evaluate subsurface contaminate transport and groundwater/surface water interactions.
- Leads subordinate staff in field data collection and data analysis.
- Provides support for other projects by preparing visual materials.
Communicates hydrogeologic information to diverse audiences:
- Writes professional technical reports for publication on the status and results of hydrogeologic issues and analysis.
- Presents study results orally to peers, managers, and to non-technical audiences.

A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology or closely allied field.
Two years of professional experience as a hydrogeologist, hydrologist, geologist or closely allied profession.
One year as a Hydrogeologist 1 at the Department of Ecology.
A Master’s degree with a major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, or closely allied field will substitute for two years of experience.
- Groundwater monitoring field experience (e.g. measurement of groundwater levels, water quality sampling, installing and downloading pressure transducers, conducting aquifer tests, etc.).
- Experience managing and working with environmental or scientific data.
- Demonstrated skill in writing clear technical reports.
- Ability to deliver oral presentations on technical subject matter.
- Knowledge of and experience with ArcGIS software.
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment:
- Must work under the responsible charge of hydrogeologist licensed in the State of Washington
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
