Communications Consultant 5
We are recruiting to fill one (1) full-time, permanent Communications Consultant 5 position within the Director’s Office. This position is located in the Natural Resources Building in Olympia, WA

DutiesFor the right candidate, working to share the Department of Fish and Wildlife’s complex and rewarding work will be an exciting professional opportunity. In this role, you will spend time traveling across the state to communicate information on Department activities and initiatives, and conduct community outreach.

We anticipate that this position will work extensively on complex topics such as salmon recovery, Southern Resident Killer Whales, tribal relations, hatchery management, and customer fishing season-setting processes. You may encounter something new everyday, and must be able to demonstrate flexibility in order to respond, at times, with urgency to emerging situations.

The unit operates out of the Director’s Office and is part of team working to establish and enhance relationships with statewide constituents, media and the public. You will work with Department executives, biologists, police officers, a high-functioning Public Affairs Team, as well as tribal representatives, NGOs, and non-profits to develop and implement strategic communication plans for a variety of complicated and high-profile natural resources issues.

In this role you will also be expected to maintain media relationships, create media opportunities, write news releases, post web content, respond to inquiries from the media and others, participate in events, contribute to team work products, and generate social media videos and content. You should be open to working with interns and finding opportunities to help launch them into successful communications or public affairs careers. In addition, your work will benefit from shared access to graphic design, web development, marketing and social media expertise, all available to you within Public Affairs and other Department teams.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or closely allied field

AND four (4) years of professional experience in journalism, communications or public relations.

Supplemental InformationWorking Conditions:
Working environment is a busy office setting. Varying degrees of activity occur in the common areas during working hours; most tasks will involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Incumbent must be able to work amid distraction.

This position normally works 8:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, but may be required to occasionally work in excess of 40 hours per week to meet deadlines during peak periods.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
