Safety Officer 3
We are recruiting to fill one (1) full-time, permanent Safety Officer 3 within the Capital and Asset Management Program (CAMP). This position is located in Olympia, WA.

We are seeking an experienced, knowledgeable and energetic safety professional who is well-versed in construction and maintenance trades to join a highly functioning team dedicated to supporting the agency mission with innovative, responsive and fiscally responsible solutions.   

DutiesThe Capital and Asset Management Program (CAMP) mission is to serve the Department by delivering technical and professional engineering, construction and maintenance services to sustain facilities, infrastructure and ecosystems under the Department’s care. Performance of the job duties and responsibilities result in assisting the customer programs in their efforts to accomplish the Department’s goals.

As the CAMP Safety Manager, you will be managing the CAMP safety program and reporting to the CAMP Director.  The position promotes a culture in which safety is an overriding value in all activities and where everyone shares and works towards continual improvement.  To be successful in this position you will be providing leadership, consultation, coordination and technical expertise in order to accomplish the program objective creating a safer workplace.  The position has the responsibility for identifying where controls need to be implemented to reduce or eliminate risks.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in occupational safety and health, safety studies, business or public administration, engineering or allied field, AND
  • Minimum of four (4) years of professional experience in administration of occupation safety and health programs in the construction field.

Please Note: Relevant education or experience may substitute year for year for required qualifications.

  • Adapt easily to changing business needs, conditions, and work conditions.
  • Clearly and effectively communicate with individuals and groups both internal and external to the organization.
  • Have the willingness and initiative to partner with staff and contractors in order to achieve desired outcomes.  Build upon working relationships, acquiring a keen perspective on the program’s business and operational needs, using that broadening perspective to help resolve more complex and difficult issues.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in occupational safety and health, safety studies, business or public administration, engineering or allied field may be substituted for two years of the above professional work experience requirement.
  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), Construction Health and Safety Technician, or a Safety Trained Supervisor (STS).

Work Setting, including hazards:70% Office: Duties are performed in an office setting. This position requires extensive computer use and sitting. 30% Travel/Field: Work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow. Work in rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces in all types of weather conditions.

Schedule (i.e., hours and days):Duties are typically performed in an office setting from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Travel Requirements:30% Travel/Field

Tools and Equipment:Computer hardware and software; multi-line telephones.

Customer Interactions:Customer service is integral to department success.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
