Fish and Wildlife Biologist 4
An Ungulate Specialist functions as a technical expert on ungulates (deer, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, goats, and pronghorn), and is 1 of 3 Ungulate Specialists reporting to the Ungulate Section Manager in the Game Division. The incumbent will conduct field work, database management, analysis, and report-writing associated with the management of those species to include; monitoring, management plans, and research. The priorities will include estimating population trends, estimating population abundance, determining demography, and reviewing habitat assessments. Accordingly, this position effectively contributes to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s goal of providing healthy and diverse fish and wildlife populations and habitats and sustaining fish and wildlife-related opportunities to Washington citizens through operational excellence and professional service. Ungulate Specialists will also recognize the Game Division priority for “customer service” where the customer is both internal (Divisions, Programs, Regions) and external (public, other governmental organizations).
DUTIES:
- The Specialist will be actively involved in the development or refinement of designs and protocols for monitoring the species of responsibility, and at times, may be assigned a lead role in completing projects.
- The Specialist will develop, guide, or provide technical advice on biological studies and research related to the species for which they are responsible, and at times, may be assigned a lead role in completing projects.
- Depending on the situation, the Specialist will assist, provide advice, or lead the capture and marking of animals.
- The Specialist will provide recommendations to ensure associated habitat are adequately considered in ecosystems management.
- The Specialist will prepare correspondence, fact sheets, and other information for the Department, for the public, and for other state and federal agencies, to include serving as primary author or co-author on peer-refereed publications.
- The Specialist will assist with Regional management as needed.
- The Specialist may serve as the Department representative for formal working groups (e.g., WAFWA’s Wild Sheep Group).
- Work setting will be a combination of office work and field work. Field work will include hiking over rough terrain, working in inclement weather (hot and cold), dealing with all forms of plant, insect, and terrestrial wildlife. Work will also include survey flights in helicopters or small fixed-wing aircraft; telemetry flights in helicopters or small fixed-wing aircraft. Capture work will require restraining large mammals and safely using immobilization drugs. Will require WDFW immobilization training. Will require WDFW aircraft safety training, and wearing of appropriate safety gear.
Schedule (i.e., hours and days):
- 40 hours; Monday-Friday
Travel Requirements:
- The Ungulate Specialist is a statewide position that will require travel throughout the state of Washington. Travel will vary with seasons and annual priorities.
Tools and Equipment:
- 4-wheel drive pickup or SUV, radio telemetry, GPS, ATVs, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office software, SAS, R.
Customer Interactions:
- The incumbent will frequently encounter constituents and stakeholders who are interested in wildlife management. Must be able to interact with the public in a positive manner and effectively articulate the Department’s policies and procedures.
Other:
- Must be flexible and able to adapt to varying working conditions to successfully accomplish tasks.
Required Education and Work Experience:
A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science
AND
Five years of professional experience in wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat research. Twelve semesters or eighteen-quarter hours of specific course work is required for certain positions.
OR
A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute for one year of the required experience wildlife science, wildlife management, or similar natural resource-related field.
A Ph.D. in the applicable science will substitute for two years of the required experience.
OR
Four years as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 3.
Experience working with North American ungulates.
Experience programming in SAS, R, and/or other statistical software or packages.
Radio-telemetry experience.
Microsoft Office proficiency.
Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
Required Qualifications:
Must demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the principles, practices, and methods of environmental or resource management, methods and techniques of field sampling, testing, data gathering, basic research and field investigations; applicable state, federal and local environmental & wildlife regulations and policies; technical report writing methods.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
Master’s Degree or higher
Experience working with ungulates
ArcGIS software competency
Ability to conduct work in aircraft without experiencing motion sickness.
Excellent field skills.
Strong communication skills.
Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
Ability to take direction and work well with a variety of colleagues.
