Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (in-training)
While the training plan is in effect, the selected candidate will be classified as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 with the working title of Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 In-Training. Upon successful completion of the training plan, the selected candidate will be reclassified to a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.
A fully qualified candidate may be offered a starting position as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 without a training plan.
Salary Ranges:
Fish Hatchery Specialist 1: $2,781 – $3,593
Fish Hatchery Specialist 2: $3,052 – $3,964
DutiesThe Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 supports the mission by performing technical and scientific duties at the hatchery facility within a complex, rearing anadromous and inland species of fish. The position performs a variety of technician scientific fish culture duties and hatchery related maintenance.
Key duties include:
- Monitoring fish behavior and health.
- Identifies, sorts, and samples species for spawning and adult distribution.
- Monitors fish and egg productions
- Identifies marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling as directed and records data.
- Enters data into forms and spreadsheets; demonstrates proficiency with computerized forms and accuracy in recordkeeping (fish morality, feed sheets, feed inventory, chemical usage).
- Monitors waterflow and quality parameters; takes water samples and readings, e.g. dissolved gases, suspended settable solids, and other parameters as required.
- Organizes and maintains hatchery tools, equipment and grounds.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
- One year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 and successful completion of agency supervised training program.
OR
- Associates Degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field, and
- One year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
OR
- Three years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field, and
- One year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery
OR
- Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school, and
- One year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
Please Note: Three years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.
Supplemental InformationWorking Conditions:
This position will work 10 days on and 4 days off; however the work schedule may vary depending on the needs of the program and resource. Work will be conducted indoors and outdoors.

These positions are in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Hatchery Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish Hatchery Professionals (WAFHP).
