This position collects and summarizes recreational salmon, lingcod, marine fish including halibut, and shellfish catch data. The Technician collects biological data to meet fisheries sampling goals. The location of the Scientific Technician’s work is located on the Olympic Peninsula, Marine Areas 5 and 6, at different sampling locations. The Technician collects data on stock composition, coded-wire tags (CWT), DNA, age structure data (scales), lengths, legal and sub-legal proportions, and adipose fin-clipped (marked)/unclipped status. Biologists set the sampling goals for these fisheries. Tribal and WDFW biologists use these data to determine the status of the resource and to manage the fisheries. The Technician performs duties under very limited supervision. The Technician may assist with training new personnel. The Technician may participate in on-the-water boat surveys for the purpose of sampling site effort evaluations. Proper implementation of this region’s fisheries sampling program provides the information necessary to estimate fisheries catch and effort for recreational fisheries management, assessment of biological information by stock, and subsequent achievement of spawning escapements and agreed-to catch allocations.

DutiesSamples recreational fisheries for salmon, marine fish including halibut, and shellfish catch to determine catch per unit of effort and species composition in order to obtain valid sport catch estimates for salmon and marine fish. Collects coded-wire tags (CWT) and biological data sampling.
Tasks include: Samples catch to obtain stock composition (DNA), age structure (scales), length information (legal and sublegal proportions) and hatchery/natural-origin proportions (mark-status proportions). Properly implements angler interview procedures and sampling protocols, and accurately records data on electronic forms. Observes, counts, and accurately identifies all salmon and marine fish species. Samples all Coho and Chinook salmon with electronic CWT detection device. Classifies, sorts, and enumerates marked tagged, marked untagged, unmarked tagged and unmarked untagged salmon. Recovers snouts with CWTs from Chinook and Coho salmon to determine stock specific impacts for fisheries modeling. Samples recreational salmon catch for biological data including DNA, age, and sex ratios. Distributes voluntary Salmon Trip Report (STR) forms and collects completed forms.
