Our Strategy and Technology organization is looking to hire a Nursery Research Specialist.


General Information:

This position is part of Western Timberlands Strategy and Technology team and reports to the Western Production Forestry Program Manager. This position will be based out of our Centralia Washington facility. This is an excellent opportunity for inspiring candidate who are looking for professional challenges and growth.

Background:

Western Production Forestry is responsible for developing technology that spans the entire life cycle of Douglas-fir from seedlings grown in nurseries to harvest. This role will primarily be focused on nursery and early rotation research with opportunities to contribute to other key projects across the Production Forestry Research portfolio as well as across platforms (i.e., Tree Improvement and Environmental Research) as they arise. The successful candidate will engage in nursery research activities involving seedling quality, seedling survival and growth, and seedling physiology.

Additionally, field research evaluating early stand performance of various stock types and other silviculture treatments will also be a key focal area. Job includes safely execute routine research tasks, ability to lead projects, data QC and analysis, reporting through formal technical writing and/or presentation to our key costumer, original thinking and solid experimental approaches to solve problems while mentor others.

Short-Term Developmental Areas/Opportunities:
Utilization of UAV’s, advanced imaging collection/analysis, and development of decision support tools.
Serve as a resource for the nurseries in implementation of decision support tools.
GIS based management systems and decision support.
Learn more about forestry, region operations, land management, nutrition on a stand scale.
Gain expertise in container and bareroot culture of Douglas-fir seedlings.

Long-Term Developmental Areas/Opportunities:
Develop leadership and project management skills.
Financial management training and budget administration.

 
Qualifications
  • MSc or BS (with 2 or more years of experience; MS degree qualifies as 2 years experience) in horticulture, precision agriculture, forestry or related field.
  • Experience in nursery and greenhouse management.
  • Experience growing tree seedling crops containers and bare root systems.
  • Ability to identify nursery and seedling pests (insects, diseases, abiotic).
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Excellent team working skills including fostering strong business relationships with Western Regeneration across all three internal nurseries (Mima and Rochester, Washington and Aurora and Turner, Oregon).
  • Contract administration
  • Desire and ability to travel

Desired Attributes:

  • Remote Sensing and/or UAV experience in precision agriculture systems or nursery settings
  • Strong decision making, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Mechanical skills.
  • Nursery and greenhouse experience including growth chambers
  • Knowledge of environmental monitoring systems and sensors
  • Herbicide and pesticide application management.
