Introduction:

ABC is looking for a dynamic leader who can serve as our Northwest Program Director with the potential to evolve into the Director of the Western Region.

This is a full-time position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC). The Pacific Northwest Program Director (PNW Director) is responsible for leading or coordinating ABC conservation programs and projects in the Pacific Northwest region and building high level relationships with public and private partners and conservation stakeholders. The PNW Director is supervised by the Western Program Vice President, and supervises contract positions in the Pacific Northwest.

This position may evolve into a more senior role as ABC’s Director of the Western Region, depending on the level of senior experience of the candidate.

This position requires knowledge of ABC programs and structures. There is a great deal of contact, in person, and by telephone and correspondence, with the public, government agencies, companies, and potential and existing donors.  This work requires initiative, experience in getting on-the-ground results for bird conservation, strong selling and writing skills, ability to multi-task and work in a team, and attention to detail.

Primary Duties:

  • Lead efforts to develop and implement projects and advocate to save the Marbled Murrelet in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Work with partners and ABC staff to connect populations of Snowy Plover in Oregon and Washington.
  • Develop a network of MOTUS towers and banding activities across the West Coast starting in the Pacific Northwest to track bird migration.
  • Explore the development of conservation programs for any of the high priority birds in the Pacific Northwest with special emphasis on Streaked Horned Lark, Oregon Vesper Sparrow, Lewis’s Woodpecker, Flammulated Owl and prairie oak and ponderosa pine specialists.
  • Develop excellent working relationships with all of the major conservation stakeholders and funders in the Pacific Northwest including federal and state agencies, forest companies, and conservation organizations to advance bird conservation.
  • Develop annual plans and budgets for the region as part of ABC’s annual planning process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree and at least four years work experience or other appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work independently, efficiently, accurately, and keep deadlines.
  • An in-depth understanding of the geography, land use, conservation issues, birds, and conservation partner of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically plan annual and long-term programmatic goals.
  • Willingness to travel.
