Our Water Quality Program is looking for a Permit Coordinator in our Southwest Regional Office in Lacey, WA.
This position provides support to our permit team by managing all data and administrative needs to maintain our Permit and Report Information System. This position also provides technical assistance and supports public involvement activities for regulated industries and the public.

Duties
Agency Mission: The mission of the Department of Ecology is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington’s environment, for current and future generations.
Program Mission: The mission of the Water Quality Program is to protect and restore Washington’s waters to support healthy watersheds and communities. Our work ensures state waters can support beneficial uses including recreational and business activities, supplies for clean drinking water, and the protection of fish, shellfish, wildlife, and public health.
The Industrial Permit Coordinator supports the Water Quality Program’s Industrial Unit by:
- Managing the industrial permit issuance process, including:
- Responding to inquiries from permittees.
- Scheduling and tracking regional water quality permits and maintaining the tracking database.
- Reviewing permit applications for technical accuracy.
- Notifying permit managers when tasks are completed.
- Reviewing and commenting on draft permit documents to maintain consistency and ease of entry into PARIS.
- Ensuring the PARIS (Permit and Report Information System) database contains complete and accurate information.
- Managing the permit public notice process and public involvement activities.
- Performing informal compliance activities, including:
- Notifying permittees of reports that are not in compliance.
- Assisting permittees with compliance questions.
- Training permittees to correctly complete their reports.
- Assisting the compliance officer with investigations and routine inspections.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field AND one year of professional level experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning.
Additional qualifying experience will substitute, year for year, for education.
OR
One year of experience as an Environmental Specialist 1 at the Department of Ecology.
OR
A Master’s degree in one of the above fields.
NOTE: For applicants qualifying under all but the Master’s degree option, six (6) months of the required year(s) of experience must include database analyses, utilization and management.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in the development and/or the analyses, utilization and management of environmental information within a database.
- Familiarity with Industrial and Stormwater permits and compliance and enforcement actions such as warning letters, notice of violations, administrative orders, and notice of penalties.
- Experience implementing state and federal water pollution laws and regulations, permit programs, and policies.
- Experience communicating complex information to audiences who may not have a scientific background.
- Experience using Excel, including the use of formulas and pivot tables.
Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment
Must obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license
