The Product Sales team for the South Puget Sound Region is looking for someone to fill our Presales Forester position. This position offers the opportunity to problem solve, mentor field staff, review timber sales to ensure compliance with agency policies and standards, perform ArcGIS mapping, and be the primary coordinator for processing Forest Practice Applications & SEPA documents. In this position, you’ll get to work with each of our region’s fabulous units, as well as our hard-working region support team members in the region office and Product Sales & Leasing Division staff! Applicants should have a knowledge of State Lands forestry, a passion for learning, excellent detail and organization skills, and outstanding communication skills. This position’s time is majority in the office, with several days a month in the field.

  • Assists Management Forester in other projects and to perform region timber sale auctions.
Who are we looking for?

The right candidate has:

  • Knowledge of and experience in applying principles and practices of the forestry profession (i.e. fundamentals of silviculture, markets and forest economics, cruising methods, sales layout, logging methods, forest engineering, recreation and multiple use, forest inventory, water quality and fisheries management and watershed management.
  • Ability to navigate using maps, aerial photos or orthos and compass.
  • Experience in using basic forestry field instruments, including clinometer, compass, GPS, radio and laser rangefinder.
  • Experience in creating and editing maps in GIS, ArcMap.
  • Working knowledge of logging and forest road construction.
  • Proven ability in computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel, and Adobe.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to develop and achieve Department and program deliverables.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to effectively provide clear written and verbal direction to a diverse audience (both internal and external) and resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older by time of hire date.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.  Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
 This level of knowledge and skill is typically achieved with:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, which includes coursework in silviculture and mensuration; and two years of professional forestry experience; OR An Associate’s degree in forest management or related natural resource field; and four years of forestry experience at the entry level.  Other natural resource related degrees or additional relevant, professional forestry experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or closely related Natural Resource field AND at least 2 years of professional experience in a natural resource position. OR Associate’s degree in forestry or closely related Natural Resource field AND at least 4 years of professional experience in a natural resource position.
  • Experience practicing forestry and silviculture tasks involved in the management of State trust lands under the Department’s HCP and Policy for Sustainable Forests.
  • Working knowledge of SEPA policies and process.
  • Understanding of current forest management objectives & timber management planning.
  • Experience in timber sales contract preparation and administration.
  • Facilitation and collaboration skills.
  • Experience with timber marketing and financial appraisals.
  • Experience using SharePoint or other web-based programs.
  • Presentation and strong public speaking skills.
  • Supervisory experience, including knowledge of employment rules and regulations as they apply to permanent DNR employees.
