The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a two (2) Hydrologists (Hydrogeologist 2) positions at our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA.

The Hydrologist will serve in the Freshwater Monitoring Unit that will help the unit report freshwater surface water quality conditions on major rivers that flow into Puget Sound. These positions are an excellent opportunity to work with a great group of people and help support the Freshwater Ambient Monitoring efforts in the Puget Sound.

Duties
The Environmental Assessment Program provides a range of scientific, monitoring, laboratory, and quality assurance services. Its mission is to measure, assess and communicate environmental conditions in Washington State.

Some of the key work activities for this Hydrologist position include:

  • Detailed assessment of (individual or all parameter specific) instruments data quality; making suggestions concerning future operation.
  • Development and implementation of a water quality monitoring plan for FMU portion of Ecology’s Water Quality Programs Nutrient Controls proposal for rivers flowing into Puget Sound.
  • Service, clean and check the calibration of the continuous water quality probes and sensors as outlined in preliminary SOP.
  • Attending and supporting FMU Annual Methods Day Review.
  • Providing direct support for environmental studies involving installation, operation, and maintenance of water quality telemetry systems.
  • Proficient use of FMU protocols for the operation and troubleshooting of data loggers, GOES telemetry and various sensors used to determine in-situ water quality.
  • Use the FMU data management system to efficiently and effectively manage the unit’s continuous water quality data.
  • Providing recommendations to IT staff concerning the development and refinement of future automation of the unit’s data quality assessment tools for continuous nitrate data.

Special Note – Significant overnight travel and fieldwork is required.  Time away from the office can sometimes exceed 60% of the scheduled work week.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology or closely allied field AND two (2) years of professional experience as a hydrogeologist, hydrologist, geologist or closely allied profession.

OR

A Master’s degree with a major study in hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, or closely allied field.

OR

One (1) year as a Hydrogeologist 1 at the Department of Ecology.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience Installing, operating and maintaining continuous stream gaging and water quality monitoring equipment.
  • Experience in Field and lab cleaning, calibration and servicing of data telemetry, and continuous water quality data collection systems.
  • Experience Collecting discrete water quality samples used to determine the uncertainty associated with the bio-fouling and calibration drift of deployed continuous water quality data instruments.
