We are seeking one (1) highly motivated and experienced field technician to work alongside a diverse team promoting the conservation of Washington State’s salmonid population.  This opportunity is located in Clallam County.

This recruitment is for one (1) 10-month Career Seasonal permanent Scientific Technician 2 in the Fish Program, Region 6 – Fish Management.  The duty station is the Snow Creek Research Station 283236 located at Hwy 101 Port Townsend, WA. 98368.  Season employment is from September 1st through May 31st.

This position support Agency summer chum and steelhead recovery efforts and satisfy conditions of ESA permitting by staffing adult and juvenile traps.

DutiesOperate juvenile traps for summer chun, coho and steelhead
Tasks include:
Working nights from February through April, operating an inclined plane trap in inclement Weather and alone, handling juvenile summer chum, staining and passing fish.  Biological sampling including dna. Working the Snow Creek permanent weir in May sampling coho and steelhead

Operating temporary adult chum traps
Tasks include:
Trap installlation, maintenance, and operation, passing adult salmon, lifting up to 15 pounds, recording data and sampling fish

Operate permanent weir at Snow Creek for coho and chum
Tasks include:
Manage screens and sluice gates on large, permanent weir, passing adult salmon and steelhead, recording data, biological sampling.

Operating temporary adult chum traps
Tasks include:
Trap installation, maintenance, and operation, passing adult salmon, lifting up to 15 pounds, recording data and sampling fish.

Data producing summaries of data in – season
Tasks include:
Using notebooks, scale cards, and digital applications such as excel and access to enter and manage data and biological samples.  Ability to produce summary tables and graphs to share with staff and interested parties in – season.

Spawning and carcass surveys
Tasks include:
Conduct spawning surveys for summer chum, coho, and steelhead over a variety of flow and weather conditions

Working Conditions
From Sept through January, generally 5 eight-hour shifts, but flexible around fish movement and weather.  From February through April, nights, 4 on and four off. Travel locally to various traps.  Minimal, with occasional members of public, NGO’s and volunteers visiting or assisting in operations.

Works predominantly outdoors in streams.  The temporary traps are operated during the summer months often alone.  The weir operates year round, often in inclement weather.  Work can be strenuous, lifting sandbags, driving posts, changing screen panels and carrying live fish.  Operating wenches and sluice gates to raise panels.  Hand tools, weedeaters saws to clear and maintain trap sites.

Union
This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.”

QualificationsGraduate from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1
OR
Graduate from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of laboratory experience or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist or zoologist.

College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Required Experience
Knowledge of adult and juvenile trapping and survey methods for salmon.
Experience with spawning ground surveys, data collection, management, and summaries.
Experience biologically sampling salmonids.

Preferred Experience
Ability to conduct surveys under strenuous conditions in inclement weather, working days or nights depending on season.
Experience with MS Excel and Access applications
