The Fish Science Program within the Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking to fill a Scientific Technician 1 position. We are seeking a highly motivated field technician to join a diverse team while promoting the conservation of Washington State’s salmonid and trout populations. This opportunity is located in Kittitas County and the anticipated appointment length is 2.5 Months, August 10th – October 29th.

Duties
- Provides management information related to salmonid life cycle models, evaluations of hatchery operations/strategies, hatchery/wild interactions science, harvest, and habitat actions.
- Assist with completing contract deliverables associated with annual biological studies conducted by the Ecological Interaction Team.
- Assist with Entiat River Basin spring Chinook egg-to-fry survival study including equipment preparation, preconstruction of artificial redds, stocking of egg boxes and data entry.
- Assist with backpack electrofishing by netting fish, carrying buckets and accurately measuring/weighing fish, PIT tagging and collecting genetic samples.
- Yakima River competition/capacity work including rafting downriver and snorkeling active precocious male redds.
- Equipment repair, data entry and other tasks asked of by senior technicians and biologists.
- Work Setting, including hazards: Wading and snorkeling in the Yakima River basin in swift and deep water at times.
- Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Possibility of working 12 – 13 hours/day associated with Entiat River egg-to-fry work.
- Tools and Equipment: Basic hand tools such as shovel and hammer.
QualificationsREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be able to lift and carry loads over 30 lbs. such as backpacks and buckets of water over long distances in and along the riverbank and in potentially inclement weather.
- Sampling areas are often remote and sampling innately dangerous which will require the candidate to have an acute awareness of potential hazards to protect themselves and other crewmembers.
- Must have confidence in their ability to wade and snorkel in the rivers and be able to quickly learn how to identify salmonids and all fish in the basin.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Highly motivated, responsible, reliable, and work well with a team as they may be utilized on several teams throughout the duration of their employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must complete all agency mandated training for field staff.
- Must also have a level of fitness (physical stamina, eyesight, hearing, dexterity, swimming, etc.) that allows for full participation in all EIT sampling.
- If deemed necessary, candidate will complete First Aid/CPR training and WDFW snorkel training.
