Natural Resource Scientist 4
(Permanent)
Are you an energetic and dynamic leader in a natural resource field? Do you want to lead professional teams
in the protection and restoration of Washington’s diverse wildlife species? The Department of Fish and Wildlife
is recruiting to fill one full time, permanent, Natural Resource Scientist Section Manager position located in the
Diversity Division of the Wildlife Program. The duty station for this position is the Natural Resources Building,
Olympia, Washington.
This position oversees the Wildlife Program Diversity Division’s Conservation Assessment section, including the
direct supervision 3-4 staff and oversight of a team consisting of approximately 6 personnel, budget
management, and project management. The position is responsible for the development and maintenance of
survey, monitoring, and assessment expertise in the field of Diversity (nongame) wildlife management,
development and implementation oversight of status assessments of species of greatest conservation need and
associated ecological systems (including both a professional biological as well as a Citizen Science
component), and making recommendations regarding status designations to leadership and the Fish and
Wildlife Commission.

DUTIES:
Program/Project Administration. Responsible for all administration and oversight of the Division’s
Conservation Assessment section, including supervision of 6 personnel, budget/contract
administration, project management, and prioritization/planning for the implementation of
species and habitat conservation assessments throughout the State of Washington. An integral
member of the Division’s management team responsible for setting Division priorities.
Wildlife Assessment/Survey Design and Data Analysis. Development of cost effective but credible
status assessment protocols for Species of Greatest Conservation Need and associated ecological
systems (including state candidates and listed species); oversight of field implementation of
those assessments, review of resulting data, and reports to make recommendations for special
status designations or changes when warranted. This work includes considerable coordination and
integration with WDFW’s Science Divisions.
Wildlife Program Conservation Initiatives. Oversee summary of data collected for prioritized and
scheduled status review and collaborate on full status reviews with Listing and Recovery Section
staff. Work among Divisions to develop ideas and document approaches for incorporating citizen
science opportunities into assessments of Species of Greatest Conservation Need and associated
ecological systems.
Councils, Committees, and Collaboration. Represents WDFW on committees and panels
discussing protected and listed species in Washington, including conservation assessment efforts
and data analysis as well as how those relate to state and federal recovery management plans.
WDFW support staff for the Wildlife Diversity Advisory Council. Coordinates preparation of
documentation and correspondence with collaborating agencies to facilitate effective interaction
with diversity species during statutory operations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s degree with a major in a relevant natural resources field.
AND
Six (6) years of professional experience in biodiversity including conservation biology of special status (e.g.
nongame) species and species assessment project development and implementation.
Preferred Qualifications
A Master’s degree with a relevant specialty may substitute for one year of the required experience and a Ph.D.
for two years. However, the qualifying experience must include some supervision and management duties in a
professional natural sciences setting.
Experience is based on full time equivalency (i.e., 40 or more hours/week). Part time work is prorated (e.g., 20
hours/week for 6 years = 3 years of experience). Do not count experience that was a part of your educational
requirements.
*College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences,
or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided course work includes at
least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
A valid Washington or other State Driver’s License (or an ability to obtain one).
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office environment, with exposure to hazards mostly limited to those
commonly found in government office environments. However, time may be spent outdoors examining habitats
and while engaged in wildlife and habitat conservation activities on the ground. Must be willing to work in
inclement weather, over difficult terrain, including slippery rocks, steep banks, and sticky mud and have a
willingness to perform in a safe and efficient manner.
Must have ability to load and transport equipment and gear of up to 50 pounds.
Standard business hours are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the incumbent must be willing to work
a non-scheduled work week. A flexible work schedule will be considered at the incumbent’s request, subject to
supervisory approval.
