The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill an Assessment & Policy Coordinator (Environmental Specialist 5) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Building (HQ) in Lacey, WA.

The Assessment & Policy Coordinator position serves as the program lead on the statewide water quality assessment as required under the federal Clean Water Act. This position also serves as the program’s planning and policy coordinator and is responsible for cross-program policy coordination, strategic planning, performance measurement, and legislative support.

We are looking for candidates who can work independently as well as have the ability to form and lead teams to conduct the necessary work. Looking for candidates that are able to manage a heavy workload at certain times of the year and are able to meet deadlines.

The mission of the Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) is to measure and assess environmental conditions in Washington State for the purpose of providing credible science to guide environmental decisions.

Some of the key work activities of the Assessment & Policy Coordinator are:

• This position is designated by the Program Manager to serve as lead on the statewide water quality assessment.
• The position also serves as the program’s planning and policy coordinator.
• Coordinating the biennial statewide water quality assessment for the Integrated Assessment Report to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
• Working closely with EAP and WQP staff to develop and implement procedures for assessing the state’s compliance with water quality standards.
• Organizing and leading cross-program and interagency work groups on water quality assessment procedures.
• Working with other EAP staff to gather and evaluate water quality data.
• Following standard operating procedures and other quality control procedures for assessing environmental data.
• Working independently and with little direct supervision, is responsible for cross-program policy coordination, strategic planning, performance measurement, and legislative support.
• Serving as the program lead for coordinating science-policy decisions with the Water Quality Program, including the development and implementation of regulations, policies, and guidance.
• Serves as the program lead for Results Washington.
• The position interacts with and is a member of the EAP Extended Program Management Team.
• The position is the EAP management sponsor of the TMDL Technical Coordination Team.
