Summer technician for stream habitat monitoring on the Olympic Peninsula
Position: Scientific Technician 2
Organization: Washington Department of Natural Resources
Type of appointment: full time, non-permanent, 4.5 months: start date between May 15th and June 5th – end date Sept. 30th
Monthly salary range: $2,544-$3,369 (depending on qualifications)
Required qualifications: driving license, ability to hike in rugged terrain and work in inclement weather conditions, ability to work well in a team, understanding of environmental monitoring, diligence and attention to detail in collecting and managing field data
Desired qualifications: Bachelor degree from an environmental science, aquatic ecology, forestry or related program; field experience in stream surveys and/or vegetation sampling; GPS and navigating experience; and experience with data collection and data management
Location: Olympic Experimental State Forest (http://www.dnr.wa.gov/oesf); stationed in Forks, WA.
Work Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 7:30 am-6 pm
Work conditions: 95% field work; works in team of 2; remote sites often require long steep hikes with heavy field equipment.
Work tasks: Will work as part of a 2-member team led by the other technician, who worked on this project last season. Conduct stream habitat surveys (measure channel morphology, substrate, in-stream wood, etc.), download data loggers, sample riparian vegetation.
