The Waste 2 Resources (W2R) program is looking to fill an Ecology Youth Corps – Field Supervisor (Grounds and Nursery Services Specialist 3) position. The position is based in the field and will travel throughout King County.

The Ecology Youth Corps – Field Supervisor position supervises assigned personnel in the maintenance of grounds; primarily state roadways and other public lands. They instruct and check the work of other personnel in grounds maintenance work and transport the crew to the assigned work locations. They submit requests for supplies, equipment and help needed; Maintain adherence to safety policies and procedures; Operate power and motorized equipment and assist in interviewing, selecting, training, and evaluating personnel.

We are looking for applicants who possess excellent people skills, are comfortable driving long periods on heavily trafficked roads, are willing to work outside in all types of weather and have experience supervising/leading teens or young adults.

The mission of the Waste 2 Resources program is to reduce the amount and the effects of wastes generated in Washington State. The positions are located within the program’s Ecology Youth Corps which is the state’s largest youth employment program.

The Ecology Youth Corps – Field Supervisor position supports the agency’s mission by cleaning state roadways and public lands, supports jobs for youth, and conserves resources though extensive recycling.

Some of the key work activities are:

  • Supervises youth and median crew activities; primarily state roadways and other public lands.
  • Instructs and checks the work of other personnel in grounds maintenance work.
  • Transports the crew to assigned work locations and to various recycling centers.
  • Work in Spring will involve training with experienced EYC Supervisors to be fully ready for supervising summer teen crews.
  • Sets up and takes down sets according to WSDOT standards, EYC Supervisor Manual and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control on shoulders, interchanges, medians and other public lands.
  • Communicates activities to Regional Litter Administrator and WSDOT Dispatch or Maintenance Offices.
  • Completes daily output and recycling reports, auto logs, staff timesheets and payroll; interviews, hires and trains new staff; evaluations and disciplinary actions.
  • Instructs personnel on proper recycling of commodities and oversees recycling work.

Please note these positions will last approximately eight months from April 16 through early-December 2017. The schedule is: Monday – Thursday – 10 hour shifts.
 

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

HS diploma or GED AND two (2) years of college-level course work in social science, education, natural science, resource conservation or related fields.

OR

Two (2) years of experience supervising youth or young adults in a labor intensive environment

OR

A combination of both equivalent to two (2) years.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
