Making Connections Through GIS

The power of a GIS is its ability to connect information to place and help us make better decisions about our natural and built worlds. However, that is just one of the compelling connections a GIS can provide. A GIS can also connect multiple departments within an organization trying to solve a shared problem, disparate business systems to provide valuable business insights, and information for educating your community. In this session, Tonya will show examples of GIS connections, lessons learned and how connecting through GIS is not only beneficial for your organization but also your career and following your passion.

Tonya Kauhi is the GIS Programs Manager for the Port of Tacoma. She has over 19 years’ experience planning, coordinating, developing, implementing, integrating, and maintaining Geographic information Systems. Tonya specializes in data management, GIS architecture and improving workflows. Tonya earned her B.S. in Environmental Science from University of Washington Tacoma. Prior to working with the Port, she worked for an Earth Science & Technology company where she provided GIS services and management for a variety of clients including state agencies, municipalities, mining companies, water districts and privately held companies. She is also the leader and co-founder of the Washington Women in GIS & Technology meet-up group, whose mission is to empower women to learn, teach, and promote GIS and technology. In her spare time, Tonya enjoys volunteering for Emergency Food Network and spending time with her nephews exploring nature, coding, robotics and building Legos.

Plus opening remarks by WATech Director and State CIO, James Weaver.
