This interdisciplinary study-abroad program focuses on the introduction to Taiwan, listed by Lonely Planet as one of Asia’s most diverse destinations. We will visit the beautiful island of Taiwan to participate in two programs at two universities, while travel in Taiwan. The university experience in the city of Taipei (the capital of the Republic of China), China will offer Chinese language and culture studies, economic development updates, and hands on experience with Chinese tea making, martial arts, shadow puppy, aboriginal arts and performances and assorted folk arts.

Culture competency is essential for those interested in international trade or intercultural communication. We will also learn about Taiwan and China’s investment in latest sustainable agriculture & technological businesses and ecological development, which made them international trading powerhouse with impressive foreign exchange reserve.

Taiwan embrace their diverse ethnic culture and religions. Expect to experience Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, indigenous and folk faiths, and Christianity while taking notes about the various ethnic groups represented here. In addition, students will visit a variety of geological landscapes, tour local socially responsible companies and businesses, as well as experience their diverse ecosystems. There will be guided tours to the National Palace Museum, 101 building, as well as visits to many historical and coastal sites. Taste authentic Taiwanese and Chinese cuisine as well as local food at night markets during the study trip.

Language Studies and Tour guide with English and Chinese capabilities will be provided during program activities, so you do not need to speak fluent Chinese to join this program. Students learning Mandarin Chinese, however, will have ample opportunity to learn and practice.

During the first session of the summer, students will have the option to travel for a four week study trip to Taiwan, for eight credits. If interested, students may also choose to enroll for twelve credits, for full session, and produce a presentation and research report. Students will pay for study tuition and room stay and trips for the study in Taiwan as program fees. All participants will be encouraged to document the trip. For students who register for 12 credits full summer option, you will be asked to continue the learning through continuing seminars, film viewing & discussions, and documentary making in the second session after the study trip. Portfolio including video and/or photo blog documentary can be developed from the study trip.

Enroll for eight credits for first session only for study trip in Taiwan only, and 12 credits for full session.

Important Date–

April 14th: Notify the faculty of your interest. Then pay a non-refundable deposit of $400 by May 1 toward your program fee at the College Cashier’s Office or online via my.evergreen.edu in the designated Summer study in Taiwan’s program account.

Program costs

The figures below are estimates and are provided to give you an idea of how much it would cost to participate in this study abroad program.

Study trip program fees $3300 in land travel, covering university study, lodging (university housing and hotel stays, double occupancy), transportation (bus travel within Taiwan), breakfast, and admissions to scenic sights during the university stay, and additional lunch and dinner meals are included during the later part of the study trip. This does not include Evergreen’s tuition, or the tips to the bus driver and tour guide.

Approximately $1700 and up is estimated for international airfare between Seattle Washington, Taipei, Taiwan, and back to the States. Check with the faculty for proposed travel schedule before booking. Students are encouraged to purchase the air ticket early for best international airfare rate. Please contact the faculty to receive information on travel agents, if needed.

(Program fees also do not include personal expenses, some meals, accidentals, or tips to travel guide and driver. Single occupancy also requires extra. Please indicate your need for single occupancy arrangement early or by May 15.)

Total:  Program fees $3300.00 (including $400 deposit) + Evergreen tuition for 8 credits, (or 4 credits additional for full session, with producing a presentation) + international flight. Enroll for eight credits (using CRN) for first session, or twelve credits (CRN) for Full session. Students wishing to pursue further research and reflection upon their return to Evergreen after our study trips are encouraged to enroll for full session.
