This recruitment is for one (1) permanent full-time F&W Biologist 1 position in the Fish Program, Fish Management, Marine Fish Science.   The duty station for this position is the Natural Resource Building, Olympia, WA.

Supervises and conducts forage fish biological research and fishery management
Tasks include:
Supervision of technical staff while conducting field sampling from large and small vessels using a variety of nets and hook-and-line gear
Working with fishery participants, both commercial and recreational, and supervising staff doing similar work
Operating and coordinating vessel and sampling logistics

Supervises and conducts herring spawn deposition surveys
Tasks include:
Leads and conducts habitat assessment using standardized methods, forms and electronic devices
Works with senior biologist to determine techniques and procedures for collecting biological samples
Operating and coordinating vessel and sampling logistics

Processes biological samples in a lab environment, and performs other lab tasks
Tasks include:
Assesses biological condition of forage fish and other marine fish via dissection
Determines age of specimens using scales and/or otoliths
Evaluates fecundity and sex of specimens through gross examination of reproductive organs
May use variety of toxic chemicals (e.g., formalin, ethyl alcohol, hydrochloric acid)

Reviews and edits data, draft summaries, and prepares reports
Tasks include:

QA/QC of field data both prior to and post entry into standard database systems
Querying of data from MS Access databases
Routine data compilation for internal and external data requests and in support of report writing
Drafting project completion and progress reports, some for peer review

Other duties as assigned
Tasks include:
Assist with other tasks within the Marine Fish Science Unit, and other units as time permits

Working conditions
Generally, an 8 hour day M-F, but occasional long days and weekend work will be required. Work is done in the  office , field, and lab settings.  Interviewing/interaction with commercial and recreational fishery participants. Working aboard large boats and operating small boats in a marine environment.  Exposure to laboratory chemicals and dissection implements.   Motorboat Operator Certification or equivalent  and  driver’s License.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.  Twelve semesters or eighteen quarter hours of specific course work is required for certain positions.   OR   Equivalent education/experience.
