ROLE OVERVIEW

The AmeriCorps member Sustainability Specialist will serve directly with the Sustainability Manager by supporting programs that foster achievement of the City’s sustainability goals and objectives. They will increase environmental awareness through outreach events and community based social media and marketing, integrate sustainability and environmental values into the City’s plans and programs, and promote sustainable practices by citizens, businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. They will also serve to increase awareness of existing services and programs that help citizens live more sustainably. Please note that this position is contingent on funding.

TERM OF SERVICE

  • September 2017- July 2018

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Lead planning committee for South Sound Sustainability Expo and one Northwest Earth Institute course
    • Develop presentations on environmental topics and deliver to schools, businesses, neighborhood councils, and non-profits
  • Engage with and inform public on sustainability events and initiatives through social media, namely the Tacoma Sustainability Facebook page, Sustainable Tacoma Commission, EnviroNews listserv, and City website
    • Actively participate in Urban Forestry public education and program development
  • Lead planning for Green Events Program; conduct outreach to and hold meetings with community organizations
  • Use existing and develop new tracking and reporting tools and methods, including quarterly success stories and annual accomplishments
    • Recruit and manage volunteers for events

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Age 18 to 99
  • College graduate
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of and passion for environmental issues
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Availability for occasional evenings and weekends
  • Ability to walk or bike to office (nearest bus stop is 1 mile away) PREFERRED:
  • Knowledge of Tacoma area and community
  • Experience in event planning
  • Spanish or other language skills
  • Some experience biking and walking for transportation

COMPENSATION

  • Monthly stipend of $1,195 before deductions and withholdings
  • Education award of $5,815 upon completion of service
  • Forbearance of and payment of interest on qualified student loans during service
