Homewaters Conservation Director

The Homewaters Conservation Director will direct implementation of region-wide conservation campaigns, recruit and manage a team of volunteer experts (NFS Ambassadors) and provide River Stewards with the best available science to guide grassroots advocacy efforts to protect and restore wild, native fish and steward the habitats that sustain them.

Duties and Objectives:

  • Coordinate and manage development and implementation of NFS’s Homewaters Approach and associated conservation campaigns.
  • Coordinate and manage the development and implementation of NFS’s region-wide hatchery and harvest campaigns.
  • Recruit and manage a network of affiliated technical experts “Native Fish Ambassadors” who provide Native Fish Society with technical expertise.
  • Build working relationships with River Stewards through the exchange of information needed to build the scientific foundation for their watershed focused conservation campaigns. May include travel and field visits.
  • Attend and present at River Steward Gatherings and trainings. Work with River Steward Program staff to coordinate NFS ambassadors to present to River Stewards.
  • Build a collaborative working relationship with external entities including NGOs, state and federal agencies.
  • Communicate science foundational to our priorities and work. This includes producing relevant content for outreach in print, web and social media outlets.
  • Review and produce technical comments when applicable to conservation campaigns on hatchery, harvest, or habitat protection issues.
  • Collaborate with NFS staff on tasks as needed (events, fundraising, strategic planning, field studies, etc).

Skills/Qualifications:

Native Fish Society seeks an experienced individual with a deep understanding of the conservation implications of salmonid hatchery and harvest impacts. Expertise in the Endangered Species Act, state, and federal environmental statutes required. An advanced degree in law or science preferred, but equivalent experience working in non-profit, aquatic science, conservation biology or environmental law and/or advocacy sectors would be considered. A strong candidate should have a willingness to be engaged in controversial issues and to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

Additional considerations:

  • Passion for the Pacific Northwest’s wild, native fish and rivers.
  • Positive, friendly, and works well in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Proficiency in basic computer software such as Word and Excel.
  • Experience working on legislative campaigns, managing litigation, and coalition-building is desirable.
  • Experience with GIS and CRM platforms a plus.

Pay and Location:

Position is full-time. Competitive salary, commensurate with experience. Native Fish Society offers attractive benefits and paid time off for holidays, vacation, and sick leave.

The Homewaters Conservation Director reports to the Executive Director and is part of a conservation team that includes our River Steward Program staff. Most work is performed from our office in Oregon City, OR but the position will also require some traveling, evening, and weekend work (when appropriate).
