DESCRIPTION:
About the Position
This position entails gym supervision for volleyball and basketball from September through June (about 9 hours a week), summer camp counselor from June through August (40 hours a week). This position is a .3 FTE and is regular/part time non-benefited.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Perform work at a variety of indoor, outdoor, and office locations throughout the local area, including schools, recreation centers, fields, and similar locations
  • Travel to and from locations throughout the local area to provide in-person facilitation, supervision, monitoring, administration, and conduct of various recreation programs
  • Provide responsive, non-judgmental, and constant in-person customer service to a diverse public
  • Clearly communicate rules, regulations, information, and procedures to recreation program participants from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate activities as required
  • Transport, organize, distribute, collect, load, and unload a variety of recreational equipment and supplies associated with games, sports, activities and programs
  • Observe activities in progress to monitor participants for appropriate interpersonal communication, interactions, behaviors, participation, and adherence with safety and other applicable regulations
  • Provide at the moment intervention, conflict resolution, and problem solving for/with program participants as needed
  • Use good judgment in assessing situations and summon assistance from peers, supervisors, emergency services, or law enforcement as required
  • Keep detailed, accurate, and complete records such as participant registration and payment information in a variety of electronic and other formats
  • Work independently as part of a customer service oriented team
  • Perform basic custodial and clean up duties at a variety of outdoor and indoor facilities and program sites
  • Set up and take down equipment, portable seating, tables, and similar items
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance and serviceability checks on equipment and gear used for recreation programs and activities
  • Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.

Experience/Education:

  • Experience providing in-person service to a diverse public.
  • Education and/or experience providing public service in recreation, community based programs, physical education, craft activities, or a closely related field preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age before starting work with the City of Olympia.
  • In accordance with RCW 43.43.830, persons selected for positions in this classification must successfully complete a criminal record check prior to beginning employment with the City of Olympia.

Contacts:

  • Recreation Specialists are in constant contact with a diverse public participating in a wide variety of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services programs, activities, and events.
  • Recreation Specialist communicate frequently with school district staff to schedule events and coordinate use of facilities.
  • These public contacts are conducted in a courteous, positive, service oriented and informative manner.
  • Contacts may sometimes involve complaint resolution, working with dissatisfied customers, or firmly communication rules and procedures to uncooperative and antagonistic citizens, or enforcing regulations and behavior standards.
  • All public contacts are to be handled in a calm, non-judgmental manner.
  • Recreation Specialists have frequent contacts with supervisors and other staff to plan and accomplish work, resolve service delivery problems, and obtain training and direction as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None given.

Accountability:

  • The Recreation Specialist is responsible to the Recreation Program Manager or designated supervisor for performing assigned activities efficiently and properly.

Working Conditions:

  • Recreation Specialists may work indoors in large, busy, multi-use public facilities, and a variety of outdoor locations, or in office settings.
  • Recreation Specialists may work mornings, evenings, weekends, or on rotating or irregular schedules.
  • Recreation Specialists may be exposed to adverse weather conditions and temperature variations.
  • May be assigned to work in areas where smoking is not permitted.
  • The classification is responsible for in person customer service and will have constant contact with a diverse, multi ethnic population of all ages.
  • Work will involve constant interaction with individuals and groups of various sizes.
  • Some public contacts may be regulatory, corrective, or confrontational in nature.
