Has your career focused on protecting, preserving and enhancing the environment? Are you interested in joining a team working to protect Washington’s waters? Our Water Quality Program is looking to hire a Municipal Unit Supervisor (WMS Band 1) in our Headquarters building in Lacey, WA

The Municipal Unit in Ecology’s Water Quality Program supports some of the most advanced municipal stormwater management regulations in the country. The planners, scientists, and engineers working in the Unit develop and support municipal stormwater permits, technical manuals, and guidance. Staff also administer an innovative regional stormwater monitoring program and lead the Stormwater Strategic Initiative for Puget Sound recovery. Engineers provide technical support for stormwater grant projects across the state.

Duties

The mission of the Water Quality Program is to protect and restore Washington’s waters to sustain healthy watersheds and communities. Our work ensures that state waters support beneficial uses including recreational and business activities, supplies for clean drinking water, and the protection of fish, shellfish, wildlife, and public health.

The Municipal Unit Supervisor works with permit planners, scientists, and engineers within the Unit, grant managers and permit planners in the regions, local government staff implementing permits, tribes, US EPA, and interested stakeholders.

This position will learn about some of the most advanced local stormwater management programs in the country. They will be responsible for supporting staff in developing new stormwater regulations and technical guidance to support local programs and grant projects.

The majority of this work will include:

  • Supporting staff as they work with stakeholders and regional permit planners to both develop new permit and manual requirements and implementing existing requirements
  • Connecting staff across the program in providing engineering, technical, and project management support to grant projects
  • Leading the way for advancing stormwater management practices across the state
  • Maintaining strong teams and relationships across the Water Quality Program

Qualifications
 

Required Qualifications:
A Bachelors degree in environmental, physical, or natural science, engineering, planning, or closely related field

AND

Five years of professional level work experience in water quality management, environmental sciences or related field. Relevant advanced education may substitute for part of the required experience on a year-for-year basis, up to two years maximum.

Desired Qualifications:

Education or experience in management and/or supervision

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
