SALARY RANGE:

$3,123 – $4,191 per month

TYPE OF POSITION:        

Permanent, Full-time.   This position is represented by the WPEA.
Important Note:   Once appointed to this position the incumbent will be required to pay union dues or other representation fees within the first 30 days of employment.

POSITION PROFILE:
Under the direction of the Blue Mountain Unit Fire Forester, performs professional and skilled technical resource protection-related activities.  Responsible for planning, implementing and performing prevention, suppression, pre-suppression, fuels reduction projects, burn permit and training activities within the district.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four years of experience working in a wildland fire program
  • Experience supervising or leading wildland firefighting personnel – training, preparedness and suppression
  • Knowledge of burn permit and fire regulations
  • Knowledge of regulatory education and enforcement
  • Knowledge of forest fire prevention and suppression techniques
  • General wildland forestry skills i.e., compass and map reading, driving on unimproved roads
  • Ability in computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Resource Management or related field.
  • Knowledge of employment rules and regulations.
  •  Knowledge of the Incident Command System.
  • NWCG certification at the Task Force Leader (TFL) and Incident Commander Type 4 level or higher

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Qualified in any of the NWCG Single Resource Boss positions or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
  • Must pass work capacity test at the arduous level.
  • May require night and weekend work, as well as travel.
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Must be 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Must have the ability to work independently in a high stress environment.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
