Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2
(Permanent)

There are currently two (2) permanent Fish and Wildlife Biologist 2 position available in the Hatcheries Division of the Fish Program in Olympia.   The primary purpose of this position is to operate Automated and Manual Coded-Wire Tagging/Mass Marking Mobile Wet Labs at hatcheries statewide.

Duties
Work independently operating an automated/manual coded wire tagging/mass marking mobile wet lab statewide.
Work independently to plan and organize tagging/marking experiments statewide, using previously established methods for sound scientific procedures and results.
Supervise up to 11 contracted labor employees
Monitor quality control of work product, fish health, and personnel.
Maintaining tagging and marking equipment
Analyze coded wire tag data for fishery contribution rates, escapement and other
Research as needed.
Train WDFW staff on the proper use of coded wire tag Electronic Detection Equipment.
Train work unit and other agency employees in the proper fundamentals of
tagging/marking techniques.

Working Conditions
This position requires that you be willing and able to work overtime and perform occasional shift work. There is extensive driving and extensive travel statewide; up to six months, 5 days per week. Work in inclement weather.  Requires good physical health.  Ability to stand for long hours, lift up to 40 pounds, ability to work around hatchery ponds and catwalks over hatchery ponds.

Union
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP).  As a condition of employment you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.

Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science AND one year of professional experience in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.  A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute for the required experience. OR One year as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 1.

Preferred Applicants will also have demonstrated experience in:

  • Operating a manual or automated tagging/mass marking mobile wet lab.
  • Operating and maintaining Mark IV coded wire tag injector.
  • Working with the coded wire tag system.
  • Working in a salmon hatchery environment.
  • Supervising employees.
  • Working independently and being self-motivated.
  • Working with hand tools for general repairs to automated/manual marking labs.
  • Data analysis leading to publication of research findings.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
