The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill two temporary 5-month Surface Water Monitoring Assistant (Environmental Technician) positions. One position will be located in our Eastern Regional Office (ERO) in Spokane, WA and the other position will be located in our Central Regional Office in Union Gap, WA.

The Surface Water Monitoring Assistant positions conduct surveys, analyze and record field conditions; and conduct fieldwork using established set of protocols, assist with data management and analysis, and report preparation, under direct supervision.

Agency Mission:  Ecology’s mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington’s environment and to promote the wise management of our air, land and water for the benefit of current and future generations.

Program Mission:  The Environmental Assessment Program provides a range of scientific, monitoring, laboratory, and quality assurance services. Its mission is to measure, assess, and communicate environmental conditions in Washington State.

Under direction and supervision assists with conducting Surface Water Monitoring program to assess surface water quality conditions in Eastern Washington.

Some of the key work activities of the Surface Water Monitoring Assistant positions include:

  • Field gear preparation and use, instrument calibration, collection and preparation of environmental samples and stream flow measurements.
  • Under the direction of the project manager assists in preparation of scientific reports.
  • Assists with data reduction, analysis, entry of project data into Ecology’s Environmental Information Management System (EIM).
  • Assists with quality assurance review of environmental data.
  • Assists with development of protocols and procedures for conducting Surface Water Monitoring duties.
  • Participates in unit, section, and program meetings as appropriate.
  • Stays current on required safety training.

Qualifications
 

Required Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent

AND

Two (2) years of technical or third clerical-level experience in an environmental agency or office.

College-level course work in environmental, physical or natural sciences, or closely related field may be substituted, year for year, for the required experience.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to conduct field sampling under a variety of conditions.
  • Familiarity with OFFICE MACHINES, EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, MOTOR VEHICLES, ETC.: Including, but not limited to the following: computer, telephone, copy machine, network printer, facsimile machine, valid United States driver’s license, continuous data monitors, field meters, operate boats, database software, spreadsheet software, word processing software, statistics software, van/vehicle; Habitat measures (leveling rod, measuring tape, canopy densiometer, clinometer, compass; hand level, flow meter); Chemistry measures (Hydrolab minisonde); and GPS.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
