Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a graduate level intern for the Drainage and Wastewater (DWW) Line of Business within the Planning and Program Management Division. The selected candidate will learn and help formulate wastewater and stormwater plans and policies to provide  efficient and forward-looking utility services that protect Seattle’s quality of life.

Learning objectives include, but are not limited to:

  • Integrate different disciplinary approaches to the analysis of infrastructure problems as well as to planning and policy development
  • Improving drainage and wastewater systems through the development of sound public policies
  • Use of public investments, regulations and incentives to shape the future of the Drainage and Wastewater utility
  • Integrate institutional and intergovernmental constraints into planning and policy development
  • Use a broad set of analytical and evaluation techniques to assess impacts of urban development and climate change on infrastructure.

There is currently one graduate internship opportunity available. The projected start date is early-June. This internship is for up to 18 months or graduation, whichever comes first. We require a minimum 1-year commitment for this internship opportunity.

 Job Responsibilities:
As a member of the Planning and Program Management Division, the selected intern will:

  • Have an opportunity to work closely with professionals who have extensive experience in integrated utility and natural resource planning and design
  • Participate in the development of drainage and wastewater system master plans that account for known system shortfalls, changing regulatory requirements, and anticipated pressures from development and climate change
  • Assist in the analysis and development of policies related to the drainage and wastewater systems
  • Support coordination with other City Departments and external agencies.
 Qualifications:
Education: Must be a graduate level student, currently enrolled pursuing a degree in Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Public Policy, Environmental Studies, or a closely related field.

Graduate applicants must be enrolled on a part-time of full-time basis for the duration of the internship and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Exception: Students are not required to be enrolled during the summer sessions, but must provide documentation of continued Fall enrollment at the end of Spring quarter.

 Additional Information:
Hours:  During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (15-20 hours per week). This internship opportunity may permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. Work is normally performed between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday.
