The Solid Waste Management Program is looking to fill an Administrative Intern 2 position. The position will be located in our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA.

The Administrative Intern 2 position will assist the facility engineers and other staff in the Industrial Section with various tasks related to the permits that are issued and inspections conducted by the Section. This position will evaluate and analyze compliance data received by the section and create summary and tracking spreadsheets and documents to help engineers. This internship is a great introduction into the work that is performed by Ecology. We implement many of the programs within the agency and perform permitting as well as compliance tasks. This position provides you with the opportunity to work with some of the largest industries throughout the state.

Duties

The Solid Waste Management Program’s Industrial Section provides oversight and regulation for air, water, and waste activities for most of Washington’s largest industrial facilities. These include refineries, smelters, pulp and paper mills, and chemical manufacturing plants. Industrial Section staff also oversee cleanup work at some of these sites.

Some of the key work activities of the Administrative Intern 2 position include:

  • Compiling potential to emit data for all Industrial Section Title V air emission sources. Information will be used as a starting point for engineers in preparing the permit’s Statement of Basis (including CAM evaluation).
  • Reviewing and analyzing facility compliance data for Industrial Section facilities. In particular, create a stack testing spreadsheet template for the section. Populate the templates with facility specific stack test data. Also, help analyze NPDES (DMR), stack test, and WIERS emission inventory data as needed. Providing analysis and summary of any trends or discrepancies in the comparison of the data.
  • Assisting engineers with NPDES inspections, including sampling events.

This is a non-permanent position that is expected to go through November 18, 2018.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university.

Desired Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science degree in a major engineering discipline (environmental, civil, mechanical, or chemical).

Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment:

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
