Salmon Recovery Policy Lead (WMS)

In this role you are a leader and relationship builder who listens and communicates effectively to achieve understanding and support with a diverse group of stakeholders.
You will work directly with tribal leaders and policy staff on the development and implementation of salmon and steelhead recovery actions. This position will showcase your ability to make both strategic and tactical decisions that can have far reaching impact. The Salmon policy recovery lead is seen as the department expert on the Salmon Recovery act and the associated department policies.

DutiesKey work activities include:

  • Responsible for strengthening relationships, improving communication, and building and expanding strategic partnerships to promote the department’s budget and policy agenda for salmon recovery.
  • Strategic Planning: This position is responsible for coordination and development of the salmon recovery priorities and actions in the department’s strategic plan.
  • Work closely with other resource programs and coordinates across the department to ensure the Governor’s office, Tribes, NOAA, Regional Salmon Recovery Boards, and recreational and commercial fishers are adequately informed on department salmon recovery priorities and they  have a point person and a clear line of communication to the department on key salmon recovery policy issues.
  • Work internally with the Director, Executive Management Team, and the Fish and Wildlife Commission to ensure there is a cohesive department strategic vision and budget and policy priorities for salmon recovery.
  • Responsible for maintaining and expanding state and federal budgets for salmon recovery actions.

 

QualificationsRequired Education, Experience, and Competencies.

  • A degree in biology, environmental science, or public administration or a related field and three years of progressively professional experience in policy and coordination.
  • 3 years experience working on salmon recovery and environmental policies with state, tribal, or local government.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • 3 years experience facilitating, coordinating or convening diverse groups of people to achieve shared goals
  • Experience working with elected officials (tribal, local, state or federal)
  • Additional qualifying experience may substitute year for year of education.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to applicable laws and regulations and basic functions of a state or local government.

Supplemental Information

Work Schedule:
Standard business hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5 p.m., but may be required to work more than 40 hours per week or on weekends to meet deadlines during peak periods and/or to meet business needs.

A flexible work schedule, including teleworking, can be considered at the incumbent’s request, subject to supervisory approval.
