Fish Biologist 2
Working under general supervision with the Warmwater Assessment Team Lead Biologist 3, this position organizes and conducts detailed biological and habitat surveys, and research on Washington lakes.  The position duties often include supervision of temporary Scientific Technician staff and volunteers to accomplish project objectives.  Data collected by the warmwater fisheries assessment team provides the science upon which District, Regional, and Program Management Biologists base fisheries management decisions.

We are seeking one (1) highly motivated Fish Biologist to work alongside a diverse team promoting the conservation of Washington State’s salmonid population.  This opportunity is located in Thurston County.

This recruitment will fill a permanent, full-time Fisheries Biologist 2 position in the Fish Program, Region 6 Fish Management, Warmwater Team.  The duty station is the Natural Resource Building in Olympia, WA.

Throughout the year, the individual in this position interacts with warmwater team biologists, scientific technicians, volunteers, regional and district management biologists, and warmwater program biologists.

Duties assigned this position are overseen with general supervision, periodic progress reporting, and occasional performance evaluation.  Supervisory role is limited to occasionally directing activities of temporary scientific technician and volunteer help.  DutiesConducts detailed biological and habitat surveys on Washington waters managed for warmwater and mixed species fisheries. 
Tasks include:
Electrofishing and netting surveys for walleye, tiger muskie, and other warmwater fish species; predator diet analysis; tracking fish movement and habitat use; limnological studies: and Implements angler creel surveys for selected warmwater and mixed species fisheries , and prepares associated catch estimates.
Assists in specialized management related tasks, such as rehabilitations, regulation assessment, population estimates, broodstock capture, and habitat manipulation.
Technical analysis of data, reporting results, and formulating management recommendations.
Tasks include:
Data entry and analysis; drafting data summaries and technical reports; developing management recommendations; preparing presentation of results.
Study and statistical design, evaluation and analyzing data using appropriate statistical methods.
Direct occasional scientific technician staff and volunteers.
Tasks include:
Direct activities of seasonal Scientific Technicians and/or volunteer staff on data collection activities.
Working conditions

  • Requires ability and willingness to work in varying, sometimes remote, locations day or night in all types of weather.
  • Requires the ability and willingness to work long hours on sampling boats during day or night.
  • Requires ability to manage sampling gear, which can require repetitive lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be willing and able to work long hours, often through the night and occasionally on weekends.
  • Overnight travel of up to 5 days required at times.
  • Willingness to work indoors in an office setting, as well as outdoors, as required by the assorted duties of the position.

Union
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP). QualificationsRequired Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Biology, Fisheries, Wildlife Management, Natural Resources, or Environmental Science.
  • 1 year of experience in fisheries management or fisheries research.
  • 12 semester or 18 quarter hours of coursework in general biology, ichthyology, fish management, aquatic ecology, limnology, aquatic entomology, aquaculture, statistics, or technical writing.

 Other education, training, or experience required

  • Prefer Masters Degree in Biology, Fish Management, Natural Resources, or Environmental Science.
  • Prefer experience with GIS and R or similar statistical program
  • Relevant experience with warmwater fish species and populations.
  • Experience identifying regionally applicable species of resident fish including juvenile life stages.
  • Experience conducting study design, implementation, and reporting.
  • Basic statistical analysis experience.
  • Technical writing experience.
  • Experience with equipment and techniques commonly used to capture all life stages of resident fish.
  • Experience directly supervising seasonal field staff.
  • Experience operating 4×4 vehicles.
  • Boating Experience.
