We are seeking a motivated individual to take on the role of Community Outreach and Environmental Specialist II for the Washington Invasive Species Council. This individual will work collaboratively with Recreation and Conservation Office staff, Washington Invasive Species Council members, partners, and the general public to develop and deliver invasive species educational trainings for youth, adults, and professionals across Washington State. The Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) is a small state agency located in Olympia, Washington that provides support for two boards and two councils in work that creates and maintains opportunities for recreation; protects the best of the state’s wild lands, farms, and forests and contributes to the recovery of salmon from the brink of extinction.

The Washington Invasive Species Council was established by the Legislature in 2006 and is housed within RCO. The purpose of the Council is to provide policy-level direction and foster communication and coordination among numerous agencies and organizations that address invasive species prevention, early detection and response, and education.

We are looking for:
An individual with creativity and outstanding communication, planning and organizational skills to fill the role of a community outreach and environmental education specialist working in Olympia, Washington for a fast-paced natural resources agency.

Duties
The challenging work you will enjoy doing includes:

Developing and implementing a pilot invasive species education and detection program for Washington State middle schools.
Working collaboratively with RCO staff and project partners, research existing invasive species curricula developed for similar age groups and/or similar subjects. In collaboration with project partners, develop an educational program that is appropriate for middle-school aged students in Washington State for piloting with partnering middle schools. Working with teachers from two pilot middle schools to implement and improve the curriculum, ensuring that curriculum is effective and consistent with Washington State’s education goals and guidelines.

Organizing and administering invasive species training sessions and workshops for adult audiences
Working collaboratively with RCO staff and project partners, organize, facilitate, and administer invasive species training sessions and workshops for adult audiences using existing curricula. Work with participants to evaluate efficacy and content and use that information for reporting and guiding improvements to curricula.

Organize and administer an Incident Command System rapid response exercise
Work collaboratively with an interagency rapid response training and exercise planning team to educate professionals on the use of Incident Command System and rapid response plans. Assist implementation of rapid response training and exercise, in cooperation with all partners and project contractors.

Assist with administrative duties and other duties as assigned.
Working independently with RCO staff and project partners, complete administrative tasks and other duties. Work to include entering data into spread sheets, preparing and editing documents. Data editing and creation in RCO PRISM database and ArcGIS Online. Development and submission of purchase requests and requests for reimbursement.

Qualifications
What you need:

  • A bachelor’s degree or greater in natural or environmental science
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software suite

  • Some experience with and knowledge of invasive species and impacts within Washington State.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and formal or informal education and outreach experience.
  • Experience speaking to different types of audiences including youth, adults, and professionals.
  • Experience using various social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
  • Experience with Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe InDesign, ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience with and knowledge of Incident Command System, and project management.

Please Note:

  • Candidates must be willing and able to occasionally work in excess of 40 hours per week, travel occasionally for short periods to include overnight stays.
  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license free from serious traffic violations.
  • This position is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) Union. The selected candidate will be required to pay union dues or other representation fees within 30 days of employment.
  • The RCO may hire only those who are legally authorized to work in the United States.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
