The Department of Ecology’s Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) is currently looking for an IT professional to join our team as Infrastructure Operations Unit Supervisor (IT Systems/APP Spec 6). This position will be located in our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA. The purpose of this position is to supervise the Enterprise Infrastructure and Operations Unit and contribute to strategic and tactical planning in the areas of systems design, implementation and operations of compute, network and storage infrastructure.

As a senior level supervisor within the Information Technology Services Office, you will ensure the availability and reliable operation of a large, diverse technical environment that supports a variety of technologies.  In addition, you will help support the infrastructure requirements of the entire agency across multiple sites throughout the state and including a large application development environment that includes development, testing and production operations.  We are looking for applicants that will have a combined background in setting expectations and can guide skilled technical staff in successfully achieving objectives while also influencing and collaborating with other technical managers and key agency stakeholders.

Essential Functions:

  • Leadership and development of a diverse and highly skilled team.
  • Developing, building, and sustaining strong working relationships and partnerships with ITSO customers.
  • Developing effective, efficient, and rigorous processes and methodologies which include monitoring and reporting.
  • Recruiting, hiring, mentoring and developing of the team.
  • Developing IT plans at tactical levels and then following through on execution of the plans.
  • Developing system and organizational roadmaps that ensure business and service continuity.
  • Collaborating and working with other ITSO groups while providing key inputs and guidance for the overall management of ITSO.

Duties

Agency Mission:  Ecology’s mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington’s environment and to promote the wise management of our air, land and water for the benefit of current and future generations.

Program Mission:  The Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) is the central provider of strategic and tactical support for the use of Information Technology (IT) within Ecology. The mission of ITSO is to create and support useful technology services that adapt for the future and support Ecology’s mission.

Section Mission:  The Infrastructure and Operations (INO) section is focused on the planning, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of Ecology’s agency-wide technology platforms that all applications and services operate on. This section provides services to all staff in the areas of desktop technical support, Help Desk, wired and wireless networking, Regional Information Technology Services (RITS) for field site technology support, servers, storage, managed print services, and unified communications support and services. This is a supervisory position that oversees the Enterprise Infrastructure Operations unit.

Some of the key work activities of the Infrastructure Operations Supervisor position include:

  • Manages, supervises, and controls the on-going activities of the staff assigned to the Enterprise Infrastructure Operations Unit.
  • Provides technical and organizational leadership for enterprise wide infrastructure based services.
  • Advises agency technology stakeholders and management on technology platform and internal technology service delivery.
  • Leads and directs staff engagement about technology strategic objectives, projects, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Performs project management and coordination.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in an Information Technology program or closely related field;  AND five (5) years (full-time equivalent) of professional experience in one or more of the following IT disciplines: consultation, systems development, systems analysis, database management, technical support troubleshooting, project management, server management, IT supervisor or team lead.  (Experience may be attained concurrently).

OR

An Associate’s degree or higher in an Information Technology program or a closely related field; AND Six (6) years (full-time equivalent) of professional experience in one or more of the following IT disciplines: consultation, systems development, systems analysis, database management, technical support troubleshooting, project management, server management, IT supervisor or team lead.  (Experience may be attained concurrently.)

Additional years of experience can substitute, year for year, for education.

OR

Six (6) years (full-time equivalent) of professional experience in one or more of the following IT disciplines: consultation, systems development, systems analysis, database management, technical support troubleshooting, project management, server management, IT supervisor or team lead. (Experience may be attained concurrently.)

AND

Two (2) or more years (full-time equivalent) experience as an IT supervisor or team lead.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with focus on computer science, or project management, or database administration. At least two (2) of the four (4) years of experience should be within the last 4 years.
  • Education and knowledge of environmental sciences and supporting science based business areas.
  • Professional level experience consulting, designing, programming, maintenance and/or supporting work for moderate or large size organization.
  • Experience supervising, leading, mentoring IT professionals in team and individual capacity.
