Student Showcase – Bonnie McLeod

Environmental Analysis student Bonnie McLeod studies an interesting pattern of striations in the sand during a class trip to Yellowstone. Although McLeod originally had thoughts of working professionally in a lab, the program and the trip awakened an interest in doing environmental field work in the National Parks system. — Shauna Bittle photo

I first photographed Bonnie McLeod in a chemistry class last spring. At the beginning of the school year, I got to know her a little bit better when I went along with Environmental Analysis (in which she was a student) on their trip to Yellowstone. Bonnie impressed me with her intelligence and thoughtfulness and, as I got to know her better, I was struck by her bravery in setting out on a new career path after years of working in the banking industry.

I am a firm believer in the power of images to tell stories; but I know that images on their own tell a fractured story. As I work more and more in video multimedia, I appreciate the power it has to help place images in context, and to tell a more complete narrative. I asked Bonnie to sit down with us and share a little of her story in her own words. In our conversation she talks about changing careers, the relationship between students and faculty and being a recipient of National Science Foundation STEM scholarship.

Since then, Photoland has entered into a collaboration with the Admissions department to help bring more student stories to the broader community. We are excited to say that these pieces are in progress and should be unveiled soon.

In the meantime, allow me to introduce you to Bonnie McLeod.

Pursuing the Dream at Procession

Students and faculty of the program Awakening the Dreamer, Pursuing the Dream dance through the streets of downtown Olympia during Procession of the Species on Saturday, Apr. 27, 2013. The group dressed as their spirit animals, and represented the element “air”. — Shauna Bittle photo

Each year, in concert with Earth Day, Olympians take to the streets in a big way for a celebration unlike any other. It’s called the Procession of the Species, and it seems to bring the whole city out for a joyous Saturday downtown.

Founded by Evergreen alumnus Eli Sterling almost 20 years ago, the Procession is a celebration of nature and the elements; but it’s also an expression of community. The studio space where costumes are built is open to all, and everyone is invited to participate.

This year, faculty Cynthia Kennedy and Terry Setter brought the students of Awakening the Dreamer, Pursuing the Dream to the studio several weeks in advance of Earth Day. They learned about the history and intent of the Procession from Eli Sterling himself, and then decided as a group to go as physical embodiments of their spirit animals. We documented them as they created their costumes and then, on Procession Day, as they danced through the streets.

Please enjoy their journey in this short video, our latest One Minute Evergreen:

Evergreen TEDxTalks 2013

Did you know Evergreen produces TED talks?  Yup.  In 2012, some of our campus leaders in sustainability got together with alumni working in a variety of sustainability fields to produce the first TEDxEvergreen.  It was, of course, successful, so they did it again last February. Tune in to see some of the latest thinking on critical environmental issues from some of Evergreen’s best critical thinkers.

Evergreen Adds New Food Bank

We are pleased to announce the opening of a satellite location of the Thurston County Food Bank (TCFB) beginning Tuesday, April 9, from 4 to 6 pm in the Center for Community-Based Learning and Action (CCBLA) in Seminar II 2115.  This program is also being sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and the Campus Food Coalition which is a student organization.

Members of the college community and residents of Thurston County will be able to obtain one bag of non-perishable basic food items intended to provide one week of assistance (vegetarian bags will be available by request) on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 pm in the CCBLA.  Individuals accessing this service will be asked to complete an intake form and provide identification if possible. Those who complete an intake form at Evergreen or another location of the TCFB are eligible for the service 15 times during the year from the Evergreen Satellite or any other location of the TCFB.  The impact of the Evergreen Satellite will be assessed toward the end of spring quarter in order to determine summer and fall continuation.

The Campus Food Pantry located in Police Services will continue to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Pantry will provide one or two items for immediate need.  Identification is not necessary to obtain items from the Pantry. Continue reading

Busy in the Bike Shop

A young boy familiarizes himself with the tools at the bike shop on Tuesday. He and his dad stopped by to get his bike in working order for family trail rides. — Shauna Bittle photo

Over the past couple of weeks, spring in Olympia has felt like, well, spring anywhere else. We’ve been treated to cherry blossoms, blue skies and warm temperatures–and when it’s this nice, there’s just one thing to do: get outside!

The volunteers at the Evergreen Bike Shop have been doing their part by helping visitors get their bicycles (literally) in gear. They are well-stocked with tools and bike stands, and have a number of miscellaneous parts free for those in need. In true Greener fashion, they don’t do repairs on order; but are on-site to help riders figure out how to do their own repairs, and to lend a helping hand.

If you need some help getting your bicycle back on its wheels, stop by and see them. Hours are posted on the door.

Evergreen study shows the college generates big returns for county, state and students

If you are like me you may not have thought too much of the way Evergreen impacts our local economy. Fortunately for us, ECONorthwest completed a study earlier this year outlining the school’s economic impact in Thurston Country and beyond, and its impressive.

An aerial view of Evergreen and Mt. Tahoma (Aka: Mt. Rainier)

A few highlights are:
– Evergreen has a strong “Buy Local” track record: 59% of all operational spending benefits employees and business owners in Thurston County and 83% benefits employees and business owners in Washington.
– The college generated $102.1 million in net economic activity in Washington that would not have occurred in the state if not for the presence of Evergreen.
– Every 10 direct jobs at the college are linked, on average, to another 12 local jobs.
– The college generated $4 in net economic activity for every state dollar invested.

To find all the facts you can visit the study’s web page here.

Evergreen’s own Beggar’s Opera

This quarter has seen an amazing transformation in the students of Musical Theater in Cultural Context. In the fall they were scholars of historical theater, as they studied musicals from a range of both eras and cultures. Then, in the winter quarter, they transformed themselves into singers, actors and actresses to stage the 18th century musical The Beggar’s Opera. In just a few short months, they auditioned for roles, learned dozens of songs, and physically transformed their rehearsal space into a theater (while the COM undergoes renovations). Tonight, they will stage the first of three performances.

We’ve had the honor over the quarter to witness their work and its results, and we’ve documented every step of the way in one of our most ambitious video projects to date. We captured some beautiful moments as the students traveled back in time to connect with their inner scoundrels and wenches. Faculty Rose Jang and Marla Elliott also sat with us to talk about how the Evergreen approach enriches theatrical studies, and how the opera itself relates to contemporary life. We’re so excited to present this video, and we hope it will make you excited about catching this amazing production.

Additional images are available in the new Academic Projects gallery.
